Who's feeling confident? Anyone see a tube in their future? EA or RD. This board has so much pessimism, we should try to focus on what good things we can bring to our apps, not the 20 points keeping us from perfect SAT scores.

Ps. I'm not including myself in this haha, MIT is a reach for me. Just making conversation!

Isn't MIT a reach for everyone? I can see people being confident of getting into their state schools or whatever, but MIT's so "high up" that it's a reach for virtually everyone.

So yeah, I'm with you ^ and you ^^ in saying I'm not going to get in. :D

I keep having dreams that I am at MIT's campus walking around. But whenever I dream anything there is always some sort of distortion from reality. I see the buildings, but there is no concrete only grass, and I wake up and think, that can't be right.

The more I read from MIT students, admissions officers, etc., the more I think that I "fit" very well with MIT. All things considered, I think that I have a sufficiently good "chance" (for lack of a better word) of getting in that I'm not going to try to say one way or another. Call it confidence if you like.

The only weakness I can think against me would be SAT scores. Other than that, though everything else is strong. I've showed that I would fit in perfectly in MIT. I think I have a "fairly" good shot of making it in. The ONLY thing, I can see holding me back, would be SAT's, which I hope is the deciding factor. But, hey MIT is a reach for everyone, and I would be really surprised if I got in.

I have nice SAT's (2350), solid GPA-UW with Most-demanding (3.93), AIME's, solid essay, 800 SAT II's (just 2), lot's of Model UN awards etc. etc. yadadaa

sounds good right?
wrong.

I go to a magnet HS... and pretty much I know I have 0 shot. Let's just say for the past ... 10 years about 5 ppl get into MIT each year from my school. ALL of them however have been either Intel/Siemen's/USAMO/IMO/IchO/USACO/Olympic Gold,Silvers etc... so yea =). No MIT for me haha~ w.e I applied just for the heck of it so at least I can tell myself i tried =P. But if by some divine intervention I did get in- i'd be really really shocked + insanely happy.

For me lets say.... in the last 10 years 0 people applied to MIT and 0 people got in.

So this brings 3 cases.
0/0 is of course undefined... however I believe (notice i said believe) 0/0 can mean 0 / any number which equals 0 % of me getting in.

However at the same time 0/0 is also a 100% chance of getting in! So this is going to be tough..

Here are my chances
Lim = SAT Scores * UW GPA * Personality stuff * luck / X
X --> 960,000
L can equal [0,10]
personality stuff can equal [0, 10]
Usually my luck is low. i would give it a 2
my personality stuff is about a 5
Rounding everything off........
8800 / X as X --> 960,000
Woot my chances are god like
C(X) = about a .09?
9% chance

This is the formula to getting into MIT!!!

Or wait.. maybe its just like my other useless one >.>

Hahaha. Wayyyy too much time on our hands. Either that, or there's too little time and too much work, resulting in doing useless things/nothing.
My SAT scores are low on the MIT-scale as well, so MIT is a reach for me too, but there's still hope!

On another note, I promised myself that I'd wait for the mail for come, because I think it's so much more personal to do that than to check online ... but now that my parents found out that I could check online on the 9th, they're mad that I want to wait for the mail. Why? Cause they say that they need to know if I got in or not for 'financial/tax forms' and filing tax returns or whatever for the end of this year. Is this true? Or are they just trying to get me to check online?

I do too much useless things. However today I did a lot of common app stuff. Wrote 40 freaking letters (2 for each teacher. 1 for a trans. 1 for mid year. and 1 for final). It SUCKED. But oh well.

Sometimes I'll be confident and say, hey, I think I stand fairly all right chance... great fit, great essays, good numbers, good recs, fairly nice ECs... but then I remember that people with research under their belts and Science Olympiad medals have been rejected, and my optimism goes right down the drain. Well, we'll see come April...

I think it's important to note that people with research and SO medals have indeed been rejected, but they've been rejected in favor of applicants that lack those things (most admits have neither research nor an olympiad medal).

As far as optimism goes, hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

I think my chances are average for getting into MIT. But I'm probably the best at math at my school, and not a lot of people apply to MIT, so that might help. Besides, I'm a girl. I'm not worried, though. I'm already in at Rutgers Pharmacy, so if I don't get in I'll just go to Rutgers.

I don't knowwwwwwwww. I want to get in, and I KNOW I will fit in perfectly(I spent my summer there, and it was the most wonderful thing that ever happened to me). But I'm not so sure if the adcom could see how much I love the place. and I'm not sure if they would think I'd fit in. BUT I KNOW I would... okay, i am rambling now.. but seriously, wouldn't it be so nice if we all get in..

It's my understanding that girls don't necessarily get a boost at MIT... The statistics might point that way, but I think the current theory is that the girls who apply to MIT are more self-selected than the guys.

Ha, I basically spent the "Anything Else?" question talking about that... might've been a little too much, but oh well!

I don't think I have a very good chance of getting into MIT, just because I have a reasonable chance of getting into Caltech and if I get into Caltech EA I won't bother applying to MIT. The acceptance rate of people who don't apply is 0%. :D Otherwise I may get in...who knows...?
