"College admissions officers around the country will be reading my application essays this month, essays in which I describe personal aspirations, academic goals -- even, in one case, a budding passion for the sitar. What they won't know is that I actually graduated from college more than a year ago, and that the names attached to these essays are those of my duplicitous clients. . . ."

to paraphrase Casablanca: I'm shocked, SHOCKED..."

Wow! While our children are out there busting their butts and writing their own essays, those who are less competent are laying down the big bucks to have someone else do their work. That makes me sick.

I read the article this morning and honestly my first reactions was, How could an Amherst grad be so naive?

Just my thought.

Most poor students who can not get proofreading of their essays can not pay $200 for the service either.
Back in Europe where I am from, they have entrance exams- where on certain day, all students who apllied come to the college and receive 4-5 essay questions and write it during next 2-3 hours. It takes care of autenticity of voices. ;)
What I found out that my D who has very good English teacher and whom she likes, has no clue how to build essay, no idea about bones of structure. Once she receives help with rough dry structure she has no problem writing beautiful essays.
