whose new applying to pepperdine..keep the thread alive!

Well it has been a while since anyone has posted. My D has loved her first semester and is taking a very heavy load this semester, but still seems happy. As a transfer in her sophomore year she didn't go overseas, but has applied to a international summer program, so we will see. Hope everyone else had a great start. The fire in Malibu added a litle excitement last week too. Also several celeb sightings, excits D's eastcoast and midwest friends!

I just sent in my application a few days ago... !!

I have always loved pepperdine, especially since I have two alumni relations. However, my stats are not the best.

GPA (w) 3.55, (uw) 3.48

SAT I: Math 490, Writing 580, CR 530

Class rank: 172/730

Pepperdine is very religious, so I wrote an essay showing my religious dedication. It is really amazing.

I have taken pretty difficult classes, as well as spoken to a pepperdine admissions counselor. They have been sending me information frequently in the mail about applying.

Well??!! What do you think? I have great recommendations, outstanding essays demonstrating my religious commitment and character....its just such a difficult school in terms of admissions. Hopefully those alumni will help, even tho they went to the law and graduate school, not the undergraduate school. (Don't think that will matter)

Honest resposes please....I have to have some sort of idea till April.

Do you think this essay will pull me through?

Welcome to the waiting game! I remember last year with my D...this was her dream school. She had similar stats, also good recs from connected people. Do you have a good relationship with a pastor that can also write a letter on your behalf? Pastors also are good at finding other people in your church community who are alum who might help.
Anyway, Pepperdine accepts rather randomly. They do look for a strong student, but religious affiliation really helps and alum connections. My D was waitlisted, but we kept in close communication with the admin officer. she was ecstatic when she got her acceptance. It is important that they know you are highly interested without bugging them. an occasional email with genuine questions to keep them aware of your interest.
Do you know what your major will be? sometimes it is good to contact the dept. to let them know your interest..a tour etc.
Essay... most important..was it well written...as an educator, first thing I notice is how it is written, not what is written.
Good luck hope this helped!

Hi... I just applied today. Im from NJ and have tons of ECs and great recs, lots of religious committment. My SATs are just an 1100 (old scale) and I have a 3.5 GPA. Chances? Thanks all

It's hard to tell...there seems to be a wide range among my D's friends of stats who go to Pepperdine. Your SAT might hurt. WHy are your scores the old scale? Are you a transfer? As a transfer you may have a better chance. Also, my D has friends that are Church of Christ...better chance if you are affiliated with this church..they seem to have lower stats but still get in and some with scholarships. My D has similar scores to yours great ref. and church related community service and was waitlisted. She was accepted from the waitlist, but only 2 were taken from the waitlist. She was a sophomore transfer. Good luck!

oh no i meant my SATs were an 1100 on the old scale... a 1660 on the new scale. I am not a transfer... regular freshman. Do you think my location will help? I am assemblies of God... i wonder if that will hurt me. My essay and resume show that i am clearly a christian... i wonder if my specific denomination matters. what do you think?

I think that demonstrating that you are an active member of your church regardless of denomination is a plus. My D is Catholic. I was just pointing out that being Church of Christ applicants have an edge if their stats aren't good. I think your location does help. At orientation last year they referred to the increase in out of state interest, It looks good for their demographics to be more diverse including geographics. Is this your first choice? If it is and you did not state that in your essay, you need to let your admissions officer know that it is your first choice. If it is your first choice, why?

Well actually, I just heard of Pepperdine a few days ago and decided to apply... very last minute! No one from NJ has really heard of it... and so I was just browsing a college book and it popped up. I started looking on the website and realized how perfect it is. I really wanted to go to a Christian school... but I didnt really like many of them that I looked at. When I heard of pepperdine i started doing some research and found out that it seems to be a perfect blend of acedemics and religion- something that most schools are seriously lacking. My other schools are mostly Jesuit- St. Joes (PA), Fordham. I applied to all schools on the east coast-with the recent exception of Pepperdine. If I get in, Im going to visit the school and see if it is ideal as it sounds. Hopefully it will work out. Does your daughter like it?

She loves it, it was her dream school. It is pretty small though and Malibu is not a college town, but Santa Monica, Westwood and Hollywood are nearby (driving distance 15 -20 minutes). She seems to have good relationships with her professors. Great campus, fabulous view of the ocean, nice beaches nearby, kids go all year round, day and night. Must to visit. The admin. does a good job of making us feel it was the best choice. They have a fabulous international program. My D has not gone overseas because she entered as a sophomore this year, but many sophomores go overseas. She is hoping to go to florence this summer through their summer program. She is very happy:)

how does pepperdine recalculate your gpa?
