That’s strange… my friend is in with a 3.45 gpa into computer science and engineering he had a pretty tough life, impressive essays and a lot of extra curricular activities. Also me with a 3.6ish to the same major. If you completed everything I’m confused as to why you didn’t get in. Whats your extra curricular like and also did you apply to UCB?
Well it is hard to say as admissions are holistic at UC campuses. As a result a student with a lower GPA with the same major may be admitted if they have a strong personal statement and EC’s. Furthermore, the college the student attends may be a factor as well as the courses taken. Cal States in contrast are more based on grades for transfer students.
Don’t take this the wrong way but your English is wobbly. Maybe they saw that in the essays? Either way, not sure how likely a positive appeal is to your major.
The uc application says they dont look for flawless english essays, as long as they are clear and intellegible, it should be fine. I think they value a 3.7ish students who worked fulltime or dedicated to a lot of volunteering more than 4.0 students who did nothing. Since they didnt do anything else beside classes, they tend to, and they should, perform better.
@beatyou1314 hi i suggest writing an appeal letter. Also, before sending your appeal, if you chose to write one, today or tomorrow call ucla admissions and politely ask why. Sometimes they’ll let you know and you can use that in your appeal. Gl
@andrewjchang well, I have 3.75, all prerequisites completed, worked full time during the past 8 years, over 200 hours of volunteering last year, quite decent essays (proofread by English professor), and I still did not get in for CS. I think it’s a pure lottery: if they pulled your name from the hat, you are lucky.
You didn’t exhibit the qualities they were looking for beyond the GPA. Keep in mind you’re going against many other applicants who are highly qualified, thus the essays/ECs are crucial.
@beatyou1314 maintaining 4.0 in engineering is insanely hard. I know, because I tried and lasted exactly 1 year. Don’t be discouraged, and do file an appeal. The worst thing that can happen - they might deny it. In your appeal present “new and compelling information”. This can be anything else that might make you stand out - were there any clubs or activities you didn’t mention in your application? When I was writing an appeal to ucsd (still pending), I talked about how I was recently promoted to a developer (from junior developer), solely based on my self-education and how a degree would help me go further.
Good luck to you, my friend!
The UCs are very concerned that international students have mastered English. It’s a big issue and Berkeley, for one, does a lot of international applicant video interviews, just to verify. It’s not the same as being a generally crummy writer. If you did not have your essays proofed, they may have had a concern about keeping up with essays/proficiency.
CS is a highly competitive major at UCLA and at Cal. A university like Cal is ranked #3 in the nation. As others have pointed out, you likely had a weak essay. These universities do not merely look at your GPA and say voilà. They want to see what you’re made out of beyond your GPA. As important as grades are, they are not the be all and say all of being admitted.
