Why a 120 unit grad minimum when so little major units?

I have looked at the major requirements for cognitive science and others in l&s like linguistics, and they are like 40-50 units total if i am not mistaken. For me everything included AC, L&S college reqs, and major requirements totals 65-85. That’s about 40-50 units of irrelevant stuff I have to take to graduate. Its like years worth of completely random courses if I finished all my requirements. Plus the senior residence requirement which forces me to take them on Berkeley campus. Why??? Is there something I am missing?

UCB wants you to graduate as a well rounded individual rather than just one dimensional.
