i'm in grade 10 taking gr 11 advanced math and i understand all of the material (when i don't, i find out from my teacher) but when it comes time for the test i get like in the 60% range! my teacher puts things on the test that we haven't even learned and we only have 38 minutes to write the test but it's always sooo long. the teacher decided that too many people are doing poorly so he's going to have a "mid term" of all the stuff we've learned so far, but just what we've learned. not like his usual crazy tests. this is so that he can differentiate the people who know the material and people who just aren't doing homework and are lazy. i know i can do this mid term test, but what if it's the only mark of mine that will be good? the highest mark i got in his class so far was 87% on a quiz, but it counts for about 1/10th of a test. :( i asked my teacher about extra credit or if he marks on a curve, etc. etc. and he just said no to everything! i'm not allowed to switch teachers either, so i have no idea what to do. what is wrong with this guy? no one ever finishes his tests and i'm really scared for my final mark. :( if it's not good enough should i retake the class in summer school, or just go out with a 70-something? my mark right now is a 68 and it will go up (homework, participation in class, that mid term, other quizzes, possibly -- probs not -- normal tests). i have 95+ in all of my other classes, which are also advanced, but this teacher is driving me insane. :( if i apply to an ivy league school in grade 12, will my 70-79% mark matter A LOT and drag me down A LOT if i have great ECs, 1-2 university math courses (since i won't have math courses in grade 12 due to my acceleration), great SAT scores, etc. etc?

Study more. You’re probable one of those kids that school comes “naturally” to.

Exhibit A, on how having a bad work ethic will screw you over.
