Hello everyone, I have just received a rejection letter from The Ohio State University. The email they sent me did not explain the verdict they delivered.

Here is the rejection letter:
"Thank you for your interest in The Ohio State University. The Admissions Office has carefully reviewed your application and supporting credentials for Autumn 2014, and we are not able to offer admission to you.
We do appreciate your interest in The Ohio State University, and we wish you
success in your efforts to continue your studies."

Can you guys help me analyze the reason why I got rejected?

I’m sorry to hear you were rejected, hopefully one of your other schools works out. Your stats (1900ish and 3.8?) are in the ballpark for in-state students but it may be that OSU is a lot more selective for out of state/international students.

Many state schools, especially flagships, are a lot easier to get into if you live in that state.

Your list seems public/state school heavy…can you add an app or two to some private schools with 1/15 or later deadlines? Or do you already have an acceptance you are good with?

@OHMomof2 Thank you for your reply. I just realized that the international students of class 2012 only take up around 8.2% of the whole class of 2012…

Currently I have received Baylor University’s offer with $54,000 merit based scholarship, which is very attractive. It’s just that receiving a rejection letter especially the day before our finals is really shocking and astonishing.

I am trying to find good and affordable private universities that excels in the area of Accounting, but most are just too expensive for consideration. If theres any recommendations, please do tell me!

Congratulations on the wonderful offer from Baylor–that’s something to truly be proud of!

As far as the rejection is concerned, you should know that US colleges NEVER explain why anyone is rejected. Your letter is quite typical. Trying to analyze why you were rejected is not a good use of your time. You’ll never know for sure.

I’m sorry you weren’t more prepared for rejections. Applicants to US colleges should expect to have some applications denied. That’s why everyone applies to multiple schools.

OSU doesn’t superscore the SATs, so they only received my 1310 M+CR. To be honest, i’ve always viewed OSU as one of the safer school on my list and it was quite shocking to me too. Haha, well theres nothing I can do about it now. I will be looking forward to hear about Indiana’s decision. Indiana’s business program is quite on par with that of Ohio State’s, so i’d be delightful if i could be admitted to its direct admission to the Kelley School of Business.

I will update as soon as they release their decision! :)

I just looked at Naviance for my D’s (very strong) high school for OSU. If you are familiar with Naviance it shows a graph of acceptances and rejections for this one high school over the past 5+ years. Since a LOT of kids from her HS apply there, there is a lot of data. Rejections start appearing for in-state students at about SAT 1950/2400 if the GPA isn’t above 3.5. OSU says they care a LOT about writing so the M/CR score isn’t as important to them as the 2400 “with writing” score.

Anyway, you will never get a reason for any rejection. Dust it off and move on, you already have a wonderful option and I’m sure you’ll have more by April :)

The $54k is for 4 years total I assume. How much is the annual cost of attendance there? Waco is a small town that it should not be that expensive for living cost.
OSU is clearly more competitive than Baylor U, but it may not be as generous in financial aid particularly for international students anyway.
