i dont like the "feel" i get compared to using Windows. do Apples have a pro side?

haha when i clicked on the thread I thought you meant apples as in the fruit. I also don't get the same feel when I use Apple computers...theres just something about Windows.

Haha, that's funny about the apples as in fruit. :p Apples are so pretty, I kind of want to have one. But the main problem I have with it is its organization. I hate how everything you download goes right onto the desktop and the folders are all weird and you have to use Sherlock to find anything. But Apples are definitely MUCH more attractive (the actual computer itself and the fonts/settings on Apples).

I hope to discuss this at length when I get the chance, but here are some quick notes:

I'd be running a Linux distribution right now if I didn't value compatibility so highly. Right now, everything else is forced to work with Windows. I hate to feed the monster, but being the de facto standard platform for mainstream software has forced me to take residence in Windows.

First Apple gripe: Their touchpads feel laggy. In fact, the apparent latency is from the lack of a "mouse acceleration" feature. If I am wrong in this, please correct me.

PCs can be just as attractive (or MORE attractive) than Apples...

Just custom build it with a fancy case.

Yeah if you can custom build a case you can build some nice ones, and you will be expressing yourself originally not just buying a mass produced "cool product of the week" created by apple.

Also, don't like windows? Try Linux. Works on PC.

Holy crap you nailed it right on. I absolutely HATE when people say "Oooohhh apples look so cute and cool..."

As this was my freshman year in college, I bought a new Apple laptop (fully customized, thank you very much.) My family has always bought PCs--they didn't know better. A few months after we got out PCs they would always start to lag and randomly freeze and shutdown. I just assumed this was how all computers functioned...until I received my laptop, which works infinitely better than any of the PCs I have ever owned. As for the OS, yes, it is personal taste, and I happen to think the Mac OS makes much more since and is easier to use.

Having things go directly to your desktop is VERY helpful, as you can put a file pretty much anywhere you want and not have it saved to a random program where you don't want the file. The people who say they hate Macs are usually the ones that have used them a couple of times but have never stopped to consider that they could actually be better than PCs...because they're different than what they are used to, they say they are confusing and complicated.

Every single person I know who owns a Mac has used a PC extensively--they know the differences, and they obviously prefer Mac. Where did Gates get the basic idea for Windows? Mac. If Jobs had been as good of a businessman as he was a software designer, you can bet Macintosh would be the predominant OS today.

The bottom line is Apples DON'T suck, it's just that perhaps you've been sucked so far into the Microsoft machine, you can't live without it.

linux rocks

Where did Jobs get the basic idea for Mac? Xerox.
Where did the basic idea for the mouse come from? Xerox.
Where did the Xerox machine develop? You betcha: Xerox.

That's not PC's fault that's a problem with Windows. Use Linux, or learn how to maintain a windows installation, I have had Win2k for about 2 years, still running smoothly. Learn not to install pointless crap, learn to avoid spyware and general malware and this won't happen. The reason this doesn't happen on Mac OS is because virus writers and malware writeres generally target windows because it has a larger market share, this says nothing of the quality of Mac OS X, other than no one cares enough about it to write viruses for it. Want a new OS for the PC that won't suffer from these problems? Use Linux.

I've actually used Macs, PCs, Windows, Linux, BSD, Mac OS X, Mac OS 9, and more Operating system types then you can imagine, so far the one I liked the least was Mac OS X, mostly because of the dock and I've used it thousands of times, I have a Mac Laptop. Now it has Linux with Gnome installed on it.

That's not PC's fault that's a problem with NOT USING VIRUS PROTECTION OR DEFRAGGING....

And while I have used linux and can appreciate the spartan aspect, I have to say that PC's are nice because, if you only use it to play games, surf the internet, and type reports, you don't need uber-protection. In fact, I just have zonealarm and occasionally do virus scans and haven't had any real problems with lagging/blue screens of death/etc.

However, I DO have some beef with macs. I grew up with macs (mom's a teacher). The problem I have with them is it's nearly impossible to multi-task. You have to drag the dang windows around on the screen to find whatever you want. I understand they did put in a new taskbar system, though. The other thing I dislike is that, for the most part, they don't have enough ram to run the programs they come with. Moreover, you don't have a good understanding of the system itself since Apple has a monopoly over its components and won't really allow the general populace to sell/trade/discuss said components.

Just my $.02

I first started using Windows 3.1, and have grown up with all the subsequent MS OSs. I just have a bond to them. Macs are cool when you first use them (especially the new OSs), but after that, you realize that all the attractiveness is cosmetic and it really doesn't do anything special for you. Plus, I hate having only one mouse button. It just ****es me off. And whats up with that stupid symbol where the MS Alt button is? Are they too cool for Alt, so they created some stupid symbol for it.

If God had wanted us to use Macs, He would have given us software when it really mattered, back when Macs were far behind PCs. So what if you can get most software for the Mac NOW? MS was there for us back in the day, so who really wants to bother learning the ins and outs of a whole new OS now that it has more available software? I have enough grief trying to go from the TI-83 to the 89.

windows sucks

the powerbook is da bomb =D

ah i thought apple as in the fruit too. i dont like apples much (the fruit)

how are Apple programs? im so used to microsoft office, etc, im not sure i can part

there's microsoft office for the mac. open office is also a great option.

i haven't used a mac, but i hear good things about how intuitive it is and the stability. they're supposed to be the thing to have if you do stuff with graphics.

from 1-5 grade my school was mac based. they finally got the iMac in 5th grade, but i left after that year. but i grew up on PCs at home (started with ms-dos, and then almost every version of windows since then). i haven't used a mac in so long i don't quite remember what they're like...but i remember liking PCs more. namely because of aforementioned reasons (i'm a huge multitasker and i can't stand the one button). this is my third year w/ win2k on a dell laptop (although the dell kinda sucks) and i haven't had any software problems...and it's been even better since i installed zonealarm, norton, and started using firefox instead of explorer. although i'm thinking of putting linux on when i get a new laptop...or partitioning it between windows and linux. i've just been born and raised on PCs, so i'm obviously a little biased.

although having said that...macs apparently are better for graphic design and that kind of thing, and depending on what you're going to be doing with it, it might be better.

my 2cents

Yeah the one button thing is incredibly annoying.

God forbid you buy a two button mouse for it...
