Why are Duke's ED apps up 32%?

I don’t think anyone is saying Duke is “a terrible place” or that it’s worse than other schools.

Lots of non-ivy caliber applicants figured they’d take a shot this year.

Despite Duke’s yield protection measures […] it still can manage to keep only ~40% of its admits.

Most Duke ED applicants would prefer to attend the Ivies, Stanford, MIT, etc., but they want to maximize their chances at a so-called “top ten” school. So they settle for Duke.

Some kids prefer to be big fish in little pond.

So they settle by applying ED to increase their chances at backup [Duke]…

<p>In regards to athletes, football and basketball athlete admissions have WAY more flexibility than all other sports. This is pretty common at most DI schools that give athletic scholarships. So what? Yeah, I’d agree that not every football and basketball player is an outstanding student…great. Very revolutionary. 10% of Duke students are varsity athletes. And, yeah, they’re not perfect either. Neither are the 90% non-athletes. And that’s the same at pretty much every school, whether it be Stanford, Harvard, Vanderbilt, Florida, Alabama, or wherever. This constant bashing for no particular reason just makes little sense…I guess interestingguy gets pleasure out of it so I’ll let him proceed.</p>
