<p>It’s cultural. the black middle class boys might want to feel a part of the generally accepted “black community”- one that is still largely in poverty. Most people want to be a part of their roots, where they came from, a community they can associate with. And sometimes it’s destructive.</p>

“If a black boy is born in the US today, he will have a 33 percent chance of going to prison in his lifetime. Stated another way – one in three black boys born today will face prison time. It has become a sad normality, almost a backwards rite of passage, for black young men to enter the penal system and never return to our communities. And if we are “lucky” enough for them to return, they usually are much hardened criminals than they ever were before. Black men represent 8 percent of the population of the United States but comprise 3 percent of all college undergrads, 48 percent of inmates in prison and are five times more likely to die from HIV/AIDS than white men. 50 percent of black boys do not finish high school, 72 percent of black male dropouts in their 20s are unemployed and 60 percent of black male dropouts are eventually incarcerated.”</p>
<p>I looked on wikipedia under race and intelligence and apparently on IQ tests the African American population scores significantly lower than whites.
Also on another site (although I’m not sure how accurate this is) it reports that the average IQ of sub-saharan africans is 70. </p>

(apparently the average IQ of american blacks is 85 which is still ridiculously low) If this is true it would make since that if the majority of blacks aren’t as smart as the majority of whites they are even less inclined to try hard in school and even the ones that do have above average intelligence don’t want to stand out and be the nerdy kid because its a lot harder to fit in.</p>

<p>@BryDeeC No I summed up that is has to do with culture, and differences. Not all black people will go to college and I can say the same for every race. This is an issue that will change over time. It was mentioned when younger black kids see tv they want to idolize the athletes and rappers. Many of these rappers make school seem bad and going on the streets good. Role models need to change and idols should not be on the tv screen but in a home or community. This will take time, but I am very certain, that by the time we have children. You will begin to see the amount of minorities in higher level classes increase. Kids are going to college more often, and there are more positive role models out there. I think a change will happen.</p>

<p>It’s interesting to note that these “racial traits” change throughout time. It used to be a stereotype that Asians were stupid, lecherous farmers with bad teeth and poor English. Then Bruce Lee came along and now it’s a stereotype that all Asians know martial arts. And when basketball first begun, people had all these “theories” on why Jews, who happened to be noticeably overrepresented in basketball, were so good. Apparently, being small was good because it made you more nimble and agile, while your small feet explained your amazing footwork. Go figure.</p>

This is to prove that Blacks and Whites, given the opportunity, can achieve any goal, and stop the nonsense of brain measurements and garbage like that.

<p>I never said that they couldn’t accomplish a lot but I don’t think its all about the right circumstances. There are black geniuses but they make up a much smaller percentage of the black population than white geniuses make up of the white population. You list black people’s contributions (although I’m not sure how being the first african american to win an oscar counts as a contribution to our society) but I’m sure you’re aware that white people have made many contributions too even if they grew up in poverty for some reason that isn’t as big of an excuse for them.</p>
