Title pretty much says it all. Isn't it weird that on CC there are so many posts about mattress pads, sheets, and will-I-die-if-I-don't-have-24-pillows questions?

It reminds me of when I would go to my grandmother's house and sleep on the floor, and she would be hounding me about having a million sheets and blankets and pillows. That's okay for grandmas, but almost all the students on CC here are under like 20 years old, and most 20-somethings don't have arthritis and aches and pains. I think everybody should just toughen up and stop acting like whiney invalids.

Well, considering an enormous portion of your life is spent sleeping, isn’t it only logical that you would want to be comfortable as you do it, especially now that we have the means to cheaply do so?

It’s like complaining that people want comfortable footwear…

Yeah I slept on the horrible mattresses at my school during orientation and it was very unpleasant. So yeah if you want to ask about mattress pads go right ahead! :)

Haha, I’ve slept on a forty-year-old spring mattress and couches and hardwood floors my whole life, I’m not worried about not being comfortable when I get to school. However, all of a sudden my mother is. Maybe she reads CC?

The replies on this forum are so typical, always some stupid justification to asking a stupid question

Ex.

Topic: Should I study all day every day?
Person 1: No… why would you do something like that
Person 2: Considering how important your grades are and since getting a job that pays AT LEAST $150,000/yr is probably the most important thing in life, yes you should study 24/7. Don’t listen to person 1…

What get me is that those college mattresses are HOW old? ANd lord knows who or what slept on them before you. So, a little distance between yourself and an old mattress is often a smart thing.

And if a 25 dollar pad is possible, why the heck not!!

There’s another thread active right now in the College Life forum…about how many pillows everybody’s taking and detailed descriptions of sleep habits involving the said pillows. rolls eyes

If you can sleep anywhere, a mattress pad probably will not make much of a difference to you. But you should care about your health, and students get sick just like everyone one else, and those mattresses are full of germs from coughing, sneezing, snot, pee, throw up, diarrhea, menstral flow, and other bodily fluid I don’t care to mention. Not to mention those little microscopic body bugs whose name escapes me (the ones that eat your dead skin, and them poop–what are those bugs called).

On a similar topic, some of the threads here make me wonder how some of these people function.
“What type of backpack should I get?”
“When should I move in?”
“What classes should I take?”
“Which dining hall should I eat in?”
“How much cash should I have?”
“Where should I buy my clothes?”
“What clothes should I buy?”
“When should I wear the clothes?”
“What order should I put on my clothes?”
“How many pairs of pants should I bring?”
“How many notebooks should I buy?”
“Should I use a laptop or a just write on paper?”

It seems like some of these people can’t make basic decisions. Just pick one.

“It seems like some of these people can’t make basic decisions.”

I KNOW RIGHT!? Damn newbs.

You guys need to be asking things like what cameras work best in dark places like concerts or parties or what shoes actually hold up to intense walking or something.

I joined this forum in 2005 (this is my 2nd account) and this has been my #1 question for years. I truly don’t understand how 75% of the people here can function normally in daily life. Not only are they beyond the scope of reasonable neuroticism but they don’t appear to have ever learned basic life skills like social interaction and how to dress themselves. I’d be surprised if some of the 16-19 year olds here can even use the bathroom without assistance.

^ lol… it would be really funny if somebody posted a question here like “Plz Help!!! What kind of toilet paper should I use, 1-ply or 2-ply? Any advice?”

^^ Somebody seriously once made a thread asking how many pairs of pants to bring to college. For that matter, what is the CC obsession with finding the perfect book bag? There about ten threads on here asking which bag to get.

Well bags vary greatly in quality and price. Some bags are upwards of $50 and fall apart in a week, others cost far less and get the job done for another year. Shopping for a bag isn’t quite as big of a decision as shopping for a car or computer but it’s similar.

My grandma was hilarious when we went shopping for my mattress pad, but then so was I. There are MANY different kinds of pads, and it’s not really something people get to try out very often to see what kind they like best-- I’ve purchased two mattress pads in ten years. You don’t need to freak out about it but I can see how someone would wonder what to get. I didn’t know I hated foam pads until I spent the night at someones house and found out they made me REALLY hot-- which is a complaint a lot of people have. It’s nice to know those things before you shop.

My boyfriends bed was very uncomfortable before I got him a pad, they are flame retardant so it’s like sleeping on plastic. I got him a $20 pad for christmas and it’s more comfortable than his bed at home now. I think it’s silly NOT to get one, in that case. If you like sleeping on plastic then you go right ahead, but not everybody does and there’s nothing wrong with that. And while most 18 year olds may not have back problems, carrying around cheap messenger bags and sleeping on beds with coils sticking out for 4-5 years will do the trick before they turn 25.
