Why are single rooms so expensive

At the school I'll be at this fall, doubles and singles cost the same amount. For freshman, I think the availability is about half and half, but the request is much higher for doubles, so people get stuck with singles in the end who didn't want one.

For my school,

a double runs, for my hall, $4190 for the year.

I'm getting a single next semester. There is a lot of open rooms here. About 70% of campus is either in a fraternity or a sorority, so a lot of rooms opened up when everybody did that stuff.

The extra cost for a single here is $1048 a semester.

I pay 0$ for my single (I'm an RA on campus). Best part of RAing if you ask me.

Holy cow! Doubles here are at least $6200 per year (more typically around $6700) and singles start at $7200.

CDN_dancer... well, you can live off campus in the ghetto for cheaper...

if there's not much in the way of student friendly off campus housing, the the school starts to get a monopoly.

Stop whining. We pay $6,400 a semester for a double, or worse, a quad, in some cases. Singles are about $16,500 a year.

Wow, that's a lot!

I'm paying $10,250 this year for my single.

I my (old) school it was only $200 more a semester than having a double. $2,000-something for a double, and just over for a single.
