Why are so many people taking CS61A without previous programming experience?

@xcyoungx

if you are really good with JAVA then python is a easy breeze

61A was pretty easy at first but homework got exponentially harder (still easy stuff though)

61B was hell starting with homework 5

Being one of those weird people taking 61A and 61BL right now, I’d actually say 61A is a little trickier than 61B, coming from a java background. If you’ve done some programming before, of course it’ll help with 61A. At the same time, the instructors don’t expect prior knowledge, and will start off with the basics. The TAs are also very helpful, even after having to repeat the same environment diagram problem for a third time during discussion. :stuck_out_tongue: Technically, 61A is an introductory course, even if it moves pretty quickly, so there’s no reason why someone would need to have programming knowledge beforehand.

The OP, dragoon998, has an interesting set of cognitive characteristics that deviate from the normal collegiate population. His social maturity is that of a 12-year old’s, yet his intellectual maturity (as indicated by his programming feats) is beyond that of a normal Berkeley freshman. I have composed four hypotheses (with additional justifications under each enumeration) to explain dragoon988’s bizarre but riveting cognitive condition:

b He is a quack.**
It seems that the world today is replete with deception - whether it’s the internet, American politics, or Wall Street and its psychopathic bankers. It is possible that dragoon998 is a quack - a liar - and merely inflated his claims about his programming experience to lure his audience into the sinking bog of belief. Now, if he is indeed a quack, one would also need to dissect the reasons for his deception. It could be that dragoon998 was paid by Stanford University (or Stanford students) to intentionally fool Berkeley students and Berkeley alumni (such as the revered ucbalumnus, who has gracefully established his presence in this thread) for Stanford’s amusement. In that case, Stanford has won, and Cal has lost. If, perchance, dragoon998 has no affiliations with the tyrant called Stanford, then it is possible that he has another motive. This motive defies all realms of human rationality because to conceive of it, one must trespass the realms of sanity. This motive, is the motive of amusement. If he made this thread to “■■■■■” the audience of students and alumni for his own amusement, laughing at the audience as they are deceived, then I can firmly call dragoon998 a psychopath.

b He was/is socially isolated.**
On a brighter note, it is possible that dragoon998 is not a quack at all, but rather a socially isolated student who, unfortunately, has not been able to build the social skills necessary for social maturity. Such would explain his 12-year old mentality and advanced Python abilities.

b He is a precocious child who was admitted to Berkeley at an early age.**
A third explanation for his unique cognitive state (which I dub, the 'cognitive contrast) is that he is indeed a 12-year old - a precocious child who had harnessed the powers of Python (along with other necessary academics) at a very young age, and managed to maneuver admission into Berkeley as a prodigy.

b He is not of this world. **
Lastly, it is possible that dragoon998 is an alien species unknown to mankind - in this case, attempting to explain his cognitive contrast is beyond my scientific ability and all the abilities of cognitive psychologists in academia. This hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that dragoon998’s location is “ePiCtRoLlePiCtRoLl”. Is he from the undiscovered Land of (Epic) ■■■■■? Only dragoon998 and his accomplices know.

Regardless of the circumstances regarding the unusual combination of cognitive traits, dragoon998 will be a precious, additional asset to UC Berkeley. If he is a quack, then his deceptive skills will be invaluable to the HAAS School of Business and to the business world in general. If he is not a quack and does indeed possess a superior computing capability and conceptionality, then his advanced knowledge will surely bring vast achievements and fame to Berkeley’s CS department.

However, for the sake of science, I plead to dragoon998 and the denizens of the Berkeley forum to allow me to escort dragoon to Tolman Hall - where Berkeley’s psychology clinic is located. There, I will ask the researchers to run a MRI brain scan of dragoon, which will indubitably reveal the mystery of his cognitive contrast and hence bring about another victory for cognitive psychology.

All I can say is… what the…

Trololololol

…Whatever.

You, Lucyan are my new role model / superhero-ine? / GOD !!! :D

where oh where did you get such amazing ■■■■■■■■ skills ? :D

though I need to correct some misconceptions

reason 1 is unrealistic. If I needed to laugh at some idiots I would not need to come on this forum. 4chan / ED are a great places for that.
“Never believe everything you see on the internet” – George Washington

reason 2 is impossible because I have won the LASA leadership scholarship. I am a great speaker and have been the president of two huge clubs in high school for 3 years in a row. btw I owned the interview.

reason 3 is also false. i clearly said in the first post that I only learned python for 1 year. But of course if you go back to reason 1…

reason 4 is utterly stupid. I am not some alien. If I was, my name would be A. Lien. (inside joke. If you’re reading this Alex please don’t hate me  havn’t seen you in 6 years  ) on a side note, everyone go to xenu.net and see why scientology is pure EVIL and should be destroyed

I gladly decline your invitation Lucyan, the mystery of my cognitive contrast and a great advance for cognitive psychology will come another day

Wow. I see you have actually noticed my location in a edited post Lucyan.

I shall now encode it.

To all CS majors: give a shot at decrypting my location
it’s a common variation in CS.
