Why are there no good schools in NYC area?

Why aren't there good schools in NYC area that are affordable? I see so many great grad schools and universities all over the country (most are public )but NY has very few - columbia,NYU and both are very expensive. Neither is the public university great here.

Because NYC is a high cost of living area? Nothing is cheap here.

Silly. Really silly. There are lots of great schools in NYC and surrounding environs:

Fordham, Rutgers, Marist, Vassar, SUNY Stony Brook, Hofstra, St. Johns, Sarah Lawrence College, Hunter College.

What about Cooper Union? Its free…and it is like helllllll trying to get in.

I should have thought of that, being that I’m an alumnus! Anyway, it seems the OP is looking for graduate programs, not undergrad, so Cooper is probably out of the question.

And The Rockefeller University, only for graduate studies, is world renowned biomedical study… FREE as well.

Yes, I am looking for grad schools.
I agree Rutgers, Hofstra etc are good choices and are in NJ,but sadly no good public univ system in the city. CUNY is not that great in terms of reputation, I think except for Baruch.
How about Pace and stevens??

what major are u looking at? Not sure if Stevens has business major and Pace does not have engineering major.

I’m looking at engineering management or technology management degrees. If not these, then I would be choosing MSF(M.S. in finance)

Steven’s Institute of Technology might be a good fit. It is right over the bridge in Hoboken. Honestly, I think Hoboken could be a better spot if finances are a concern. New York City is very accessible as the PATH train is very easy to use.

Yes, I’m targetting Steven’s too. I only hope they have good financial aid packages.

The schools in NYC are no more expensive than anywhere else.

My elder S attends Stevens, and I have to say that the financial aid has not been as good as the schools that my other kids have attended. But everyone’s experience is different, so I hope you have good luck with that!

Surely you jest. Or you just don’t know. Allow me to educate you.

CCNY (City College of New York) is one of the premier centers of higher learning in the country. It has a top-flight undergraduate program, particularly in engineering and the sciences.

Queens College, and Baruch as you mentioned, are also excellent. John Jay College of Criminal Justice rivals any school in the country that specializes in forensic science.

Hunter College is cutting edge and has always been ahead of its time. What about Brooklyn College? Or Lehman College? Fantastic schools. C’mon, do your homework before making a comment like “CUNY is not that great in terms of reputation”.

I can’t help but roll my eyes when people are so quick to say that CUNY schools are “non-reputable”. As previously stated by heyalb, the CUNY schools, especially CCNY, are absolutely fantastic.

I still don’t see why people have to base their opinions solely on something so superfluous as prestige and reputation. Just because you haven’t heard of it doesn’t mean that the school automatically constitutes as unworthy.

Something to consider, I think.

^ Yeah, but OP got 284 views!

what? since when are the CUNYs any good minus the honors program? sorry, but i come from an affluent part of long island and no one goes to a CUNY unless they have no other choice. i wouldn’t dream of going to a CUNY. anyone i know who is at one hates it and says the profs are really dumb and have no idea what’s going on. all of them are looking to transfer out so… i sincerely have a hard time believing anything good about the CUNYs.

Well, I know that CUNYs can be good but they do not seem to have any innovative or new curriculum added nor do they have any new courses added. Its the same old courses that they are having for years now. The public universities in some other states like Rutgers or UCLA etc have a variety of programs for graduate school/business school.

The CUNY campuses like brooklyn college/ staten island or lehman are not even heard of for graduate degrees(I don’t know about UG).

Umm…hello? Columbia? I’m sure they’re generous with financial aid.

Ok, thanks!
