Why are they looking into me?

OK so firstly, I don't think I have a good chance of getting into Gtown; like i probably have lower than the average applicant i think. (my writing score was super high but my CR and especially M are not. And my SAT2 were trashhhhhhh) so long story short, I'm not expecting an acceptance here, but my counselor came up to me today and said that someone from gtown called him and wanted to have some more information about me. Then he said that the person was "interested in my application."
I don't want to seem annoying or naive but why are they putting so much effort into my application if i'm not a great candidate? or is this just how the school treats all of their applicants?
Thanks for any info or input!

what were your scores? i ask because some people exaggreate when they say they performed “bad.”

They might have seen something in your essay, interview report, EC’s, recommendation letters, area of interest, other personal information, etc., that got their interest. They are not just admitting the best appliicants solely on GPA and test scores but are trying to balance the class with a wide cross section of backgrounds, interests and skills. All that said, they still have a penchant for the kids at the top of their class but last year that was only 49% of the class which left 51% for those not first, second or third in their HS ranking. Be sure your GC responds as they are finalizing their admit decisions as we post these responses.

Not to burst your bubble, but it could also be that they suspect you’re lying about some extracurriculars or something on your application and they want to verify with your counselor.
