why are we taking subject tests?

ok guys, so a question occurred to me today:

why are we taking subject tests? the simple answer: to put up high scores in areas of our interest/skill and to demonstrate our aptitude in those areas.

but then i thought, well almost everyone i know takes either math 1 or math 2. and then probably another science one, like biology, chemistry, or physics. so do people really choose what they want to take? or are they becoming mandatory?

side note--is it "bad" to take all science/math or all history/humanities subject tests? for instance, would it look better with 800 math 1 800 physics 800 chemistry or 800 math 1 780 us history 790 english?

The Ivies recommend a math, a history/language (humanity), and a science (or so I’ve heard). I think it may depend on your major as well.

Many schools require you take 2 or 3 (or more) SAT II tests. It’s more of a requirement than a “I want to take a test” situation.

First of all Math 1 is crap, its harder than Math 2 and looked down upon by many schools. Take Math 2
