Why are YOU doing accounting?

Out of curiosity, how do you guys answer this question when people ask you?

Look at this, and you may get the idea:

[5 In-Demand Degrees - Yahoo! Education](<a href=“Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos”>http://education.yahoo.net/articles/top_5_in-demand_degrees.htm?kid=1H68V)

any list that includes business administration as the 5th most in demand degree…well I doubt it has much credibility.

^lol I was thinking the same thing.

Agreed.

That article put Operations Research under Business, but isn’t that more like Statistics or Math? Same with having Actuary under Finance major?

Doesn’t seem like there was much research behind this, a “28 percent jump” in market researchers isn’t so impressive when there are likely more Marketing graduates a year than total market researchers employed in the U.S.

I almost made my self try accounting because of the saying that accountants can be self employed and rich… :frowning: but im too stupid to do accounting… cant go up to calculus if my life depended on it… if i have to do it ill try but i cant guarantee my sucess…

i think OP asks a great question. the world often critically asks young college students why they havent decided on a major yet, but rarely does it critically asks them why they have decided on a particular major.

to say that a major + career combination like accounting should be pursued simply because it is in demand is silly to me. security isn’t the ONLY thing im looking for in a job (and by extension, career, life, etc), you know?

i am interested to see people’s honest responses to the original question.

@jax90291

Yes jax, that was my intent in asking the question. Recruiters often ask the same question during interviews. To tell them that “accounting is a secure job” is not the strongest answer. They already know that. How would you guys approach the question?

Ok ill give my real answer.

I’m going into accounting because ever since a young child I have be obsessed with money! I want to go to work each day and talk about, money! I love how currency flows through a corporation/organization and I am very interested in understanding, implementing, and improving the technical aspects of a company via it’s accounting policies, budgets, etc. Essentially, working with the money will make me happy and there is nothing I would rather be doing.

That is why I am currently obtaining a double option in accounting/finance.

ryhrnd88, that’s basically a pretty good answer. Obviously, you would finesse it in an interview, but I get where you are coming from.

I went into accounting because the job market for finance jobs was non-existent. I’m changing careers as soon as I get my license (2 years work exp).
