Why Aren't Bank Loans Highly Recommended?

NMSU OOS tuition is $24,000/year. Room & board is a bit over $9000/year. (Plus books, travel & personal expenses.)

NMSU has a few automatic scholarships for OOS students, but they don’t come close to covering the COA and they are dependent on your Academic Index (GPA +ACT score)

See Scholarship list here: https://fa.nmsu.edu/scholarships/#01

So unless you’re a NMF, that highest OOS award NMSU offers if $4500/year. All available OOS scholarships for 2018-19 have already been awarded. There’s no scholarship money left.

I’m taking the SAT August 25th, my parents can pay than that, significantly more however; they do not wish to do so because they want me to see how life is outside of them. For my brother they paid most of his college tuition at ASU and I doubt they want to do that again but do know, it’s because he was a way better student than me.

If your parents can afford to pay but refuse to you will not get need based aid.

Then basically your only choices will be instate public universities and if you wish to attend a 4-year college only if you bring that act score up significantly so that you get a 10k scholarship. The higher your score the more choices you’ll have, including smaller privates. However if your parents want you to figure it out by ourself, then odds are that they don’t mean “we’ll take insane loans for you”. They mean “you have a basic budget, figure it out”. So, forget all these questions about loans.
Have you mentioned what state you live in

@MYOS1634, I think OP is in Michigan.

Thanks, I just remembered.
That means the following universities are
possible for admission with a 21 but may be difficult financially, run the NPC.
Adrian, Finlandia, Augsburg, Doane, Hiram, Millikin, Lesley.

And the following coleges are affordable and possible if the act moves to 24: - pick 5
UMichigan Dearborn, Grand valley state, u central Michigan, Ferris State, Western Michigan, northern Michigan - Marquette, Oakland, Wayne State, umn Morris (no Oos fee), Truman state (these wrt to big reaches).

Possible if 23-24, but financially difficult
Alma, Albion, Lawrence tech, Bradley, Cornell college, Hamline, Mizzou.

Op needs to up to up their game academically and prep for the sat/act every day.
However community colleges with an agreement with a good Michigan public university, perhaps a cc with dorms (there are 9 in Michigan the latest in Glen Oaks, with awesome suite style apartments at a rather low cost) and an honors program (such as Southwestern Michigan College -honors and dorms), it would be easier to manage. In any case op needs to apply to a CC as a safety.

Even if you improve your ACT score, it’s obvious that you’re limited by what your parents will pay and you will not qualify for financial aid. Your parents seem to be sending you a message that you need to be better student.

The obvious solution is to go to a local college or JC for two years and get top grades. At that point your parents will probably have a change of heart and will pay for you to finish your degree at a school of your choice.
