Why aren't there any in-between people here?

I'm a freshman and I go to a small state school for graphic design, it's a good school for all that media stuff. I just don't know many people here. During the week I'll play intramurals with some kids and thats fun. I like my roomate but he's kinda emo and doesn't do anything and he goes home every weekend. I like my old roomate that was tripled with me earlier but he goes home every weekend and is transfering to somewhere else after this year. I like a kid thats a couple doors down but he has another group of friends now that I don't care for so he goes out with them. There's just nobody here like me. Everyone is either like a media/emo kid (who have a horrible sense of humor by the way having sit by them in the caf) or a cool frat kid or baseball/football/cheerleader kids. There's nobody that just isn't into wierd **** and is just normal.

Sorry i have to rant. I hate it here. I want to transfer but this place will pretty much guarantee you a job in your major. Ugh... I was looking so forward to college too. I thought it would be fun, I like to drink and stuff but I wouldn't like to drink with the kids here. My cousin goes here but hes like a miniature brad pitt so i hated the preppy parties he brought me too. A kid from my high school goes here but hes too cool for me too. Idk what to do...

Aside from my roommates, I only made two friends (neither of whom are girls) since starting college in August 2006.

Trust me, other people just complicate your life. Its actually best to be alone.

Hm…transferring is always an option but if that’s not good academic-wise, I’d just say tough it out and give it time. It’s only been one semester; it seems like a long time but really, you have all winter break to think about it and another semester to see how it goes. Sometimes I think it’s the luck of the draw - maybe you just haven’t met the right people yet. Also people you think you don’t like at first might turn out to be pretty interesting people. So don’t blow people off right away.

I’m a freshman at a pretty large university that I think is a good fit for me. Based on this I should have found a lot of people who I feel compatible with, and yeah I’ve met some people like that but I definitely don’t feel like I’ve rooted myself here at all. So next semester I’m going to join some more extracurriculars that I think tailor to my interests and see how it goes. Some things take time, you know? Sometimes you just don’t have as optimal circumstances as you could have to find your place, and that’s all based on chance, not your own actions.

And…DeluxeHardballer, good luck with life…

haha to Deluxe, i’d rather not be alone

To darvit, yeah i would join extracurriculars but there was LITERALLY nothing interesting. Not even like a videogame club or an intermural sports club or anything. I don’t even remember any of them, that’s how boring they were. I could transfer but this is the best school of my major around and for the cheapest price. I don’t even know if I’ll like my major yet either, i couldnt get into a intro to graphic design class which is major ********.

look at this list of extracurriculars…absolutely terrible…nothing fun whatsoever

Nothing stands out as being amazing, you’re right. But have this mindset -you want to join clubs not because they’re amazing and you do amazing things, but that all you want to do is meet people. Maybe service clubs like Habitat for Humanity. That’s where you build houses together if I’m not mistaken. You’ll be forced to work together with people and you’re probably going to talk while you’re working on the projects, right? Basically look into clubs that sound like you have to interact with people, even if you’re not that interested in what the club is about. Maybe you’ll get more into it once you meet people.

Just remember, there’s no one solution. Just be as proactive as you can (don’t go overboard, though) and if it doesn’t work out then move on, it’s just what happens in life.

It doesn’t even say how to join these clubs, it just gives you a list. So helpful. Thanks darvit for the advice. I might actually join if I knew how.

Misfit – Figure out which of those clubs you might be interested in joining. Remember, you can almost certainly just check out a meeting without making any obligations! Google the club and your school name to see if a club site pops up…it might have contact info. Next, I’d try facebooking the name of the club or a key word to see if you find any schoolmates whose profiles say that they’re involved. I received a few messages like that: “I was searching for people involved in ______ because I’d really like to check it out. Do you know who I should contact?” Never bothered me. If still no luck, email your Dean of Students (or a faculty member if the club might be departmental…i.e. email a math prof for info on the Math Club) to see if (s)he has contact info.

If none of that works, then you might really have to get creative. But there are plenty of things you haven’t even tried yet.

I imagine your situation will work out, but it’s still a matter of putting yourself out there. Good luck :)
