Why Brown essay length

How long is it supposed to be? I’ve heard the website cuts you off at 1,500 characters, but a Brown admissions rep visited my school and she said that she hadn’t heard of the cutoff online and that it’s often best to just send in longer essays by mail.

But how long is it supposed to be, really? I wrote one version that’s 2 paragraphs (1,498 characters, with spaces), and one that’s much longer, (400-500 words). I can probably cut down the longer one though, but not to 1,500 characters. Brown’s my first choice, I have a lot of reasons for wanting to go here, but how long is the essay supposed to be? Is a big why Brown essay acceptable?

1500 chars, the online app counts it for you. 2 paragraphs is enough. Thats what I did.

I have a daughter who attends Brown. She filed paper applications. However, she made her essays fit the space provided and/or if a word count was suggested, she stayed in the ballpark.

For the Why Brown (which is ALSO why your intended major), her "essay" was 366 words and she fit it right onto the application in the space provided.

this essay is giving me some trouble. How do I convey my love for Brown without condensing it into the characteristics they most advertise? Also, at this point the section about my intended major is under 50 words. Should I focus more on this. Gah, I'm trying to link the two, but I am having problems being clear and focused.

mine is 321 words. i had to make it pretty small to fit into the space.

luckily for physical science majors they give you extra questions, so i could focus on the 'why brown' aspect

If you submit the paper application, are you supposed to handwrite your essay on the paper or are you allowed to type it and attach it?

My Son cut and pasted his responses to fit in the provided box. I believe you can do either.

question....

why handwrite it ?

The admissions rep seemed to indicated that Brown doesn't mind reading essays typed and stapled to the back of their forms with a simple "see attached" on the real sheet.

My essay is now about 600 words. I could probably cut it down to 400, but I really don't think 1,500 characters is enough.
