Why can't Berkeley be private?

Title says it all.

because its under the university of california system, which is public

and cuz its better than duke

because then they wouldn’t get to tout a “public education” and “low tuition” and being the #1 public university…

^ but if were private, we might be able to jump a few ranks! :D

that would go against the philosophy under which Cal and the rest of the UC system was founded - cheap, quality education. tuition in 1950 was 31 bucks. even adjusted for inflation, that’s a damn good deal.

even if it does make more sense and would benefit everybody in the long run, it’s just not going to happen. it goes against everything the tuition increase activists supposedly stand for.

I’m having the same dilemma. I got into Cal and Duke and don’t know which to choose. :(
