why can't black people be smart, anyway?

^^i've never heard one latino swear not to vote for obama in my life.

In fact i've even heard the opposite quite a few time. So i think that you need to reconsult with the latino community.

cono was obviously being dramatic, and it's pretty sad I have to spell that out.

This may come as a surprise for gringos and those who claim to be Latino, but there are things that go on outside of this country, not just in it.

You can ignore the rambling about racism, as the main issue is where his stance is on foreign affairs in Sur America. I'm glad there are some real Latinos like cono on this board.

But I thought such politically aware people would already know that.

as an african-american, I am not really affected by any of this, to be frank. i just indulge in what is good for my self-betterment. i'm honestly not that concerned about how my race is perceived - my mentality is more individual-oriented, if you know what i mean. as much as i hate living in nyc, i've been able to have broad tastes in just about everything (music, literature, etc.), so i'm already an anomaly. i don't sit around to myself and think, "damn... my race is ****ing up." all i desire is to be around people who are knowledgeable and open-minded, which may be my only objection to certain facets of what people may typify as "black culture".

besides, from my experience, there are two types of people who i have experienced racism from:

"sheltered" kids

ignorant, lower-class people in urban areas -- usually the older people, surprisingly ( :p ). before anyone attacks me for this comment, i go to school in an area like this , and the people here are incredibly snide and misinformed.

in both instances, these people are of no consequence, and usually people who i don't want to interact with, so it all works out.

colleges should discriminate based on income level, not race, if they choose to be discriminatory in the admissions process. but that's just my opinion...

Why hillary over Obama?

Because Obama has no opinions...Kucinich beats them both but he's not going to win.

I personally believe that the college admissions process should careless what minority you are. Affirmative action is unbelieveable. A college should want the best students regardless of what race, religion, etc. they are. They shouldn't give acceptance or make consiolations due to race or even income. We all have problems, all are affected by a variety of things and just because you go to a lower income school does not make you special in that regard.

The OP made the comment about being one of the only african american students in his class, well forget about that fact. Truly what does it matter. Make the best of your situation. Look at people beyond race, religion, etc.

Lol?...........

^^to Twirlonwater

Who should decide what makes someone the "best" person to attend the school?

Is it you? Is it your parents? Is it the people that actually teach there?

Aren't what universities doing now admitting the "best" people for the university? As college is not a reward that anybody is entitled to how are colleges not admitting the "best" people to the best of their abilities???

The "best" person should be the person with the highest GPA, highest SAT, most involved clubs, most moving or informative essay, etc. The list goes on... However, ones race or economic status should not affect that whatsoever. When I first joined CC, I was looking at chance threads and saw someone posting statistics and saying that they were a URM, etc. And someone then said while then you have a chance at that school then. That should not be the case. Colleges should not look at ones ethinicity or religion or income or economic status. They should look at gpa, sats, class load, etc. In a country that preaches equality and meritocray, we have insitualized discrimination...

pretty much yeah. undoubtedly someone will still disagree with you, since yours was probably the third or fourth mention of "insitualized [sic] discrimination" i've seen so far. why is this thread still going on...
