Why can't I get into college?

So far I was deferred from Michigan and Northeastern and denied from NYU. My stats are:
GPA (unweighted): 3.77
SAT Superscore: 1990
I am in a variety of clubs where I also hold leadership positions. Also, I am the founder and president of one of the clubs at my school. I am in NHS also.
I'm pretty sure my essay was good and I got good recommendations.
I live in PA if that matters and the other schools I applied to were GW, Syracuse, Maryland, Drexel, and Brandeis.

At this point I am not confident I will get into any of these schools. What do you think?

You should be fine at all the Other schools, and I think you have a good chance at northeastern. Michigan seems to defer everyone including a friend of mine with a 3.1 and 1660. The only possible one that you won’t et in is gw and even then I like your chances. You are a good student, and have similar stats to me. Good luck.

yea, to be honest I was pretty surprised I was deferred from northeastern. I thought I had a good chance at getting in early action and all. I was really discouraged when I got deferred.

Keep shooting for it man. Your body of work is actually pretty impressive, but some colleges are just overly picky. You’ll get accepted no problem.

NEU: Low match (deferral decreases chances somewhat)
Michigan: Match (OOS playing against you?)
Maryland: Low match
Syracuse: Low match
Brandeis: High match
George Washington: High match
Drexel: Safety

Can you tell me what your essays were about?

And what your family income approximately is, and your race

NEU seems to defer almost everyone too…

Maybe it was just because it was ED. your stats arent bad so dont worry. Chance back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1431373-chance-top-schools.html

My essay was about having to put myself “out there” and how my parents always told me “nobody’s looking for you”. I talked about things I did to get to where I am today and how I realize that the road to success is mostly in my hands. I am a white male so obviously that’s working against me in this scenario. I have no financial issues and did not apply for financial aid.

I think the essay might have been slightly detrimental. Most of the colleges while expect you to talk about yourself would like to hear more about how really interested you are in them, and how you think you would fit in their communities. As you have noted being white works against you, which is totally wrong in my opinion.

I cannot talk about specific colleges in my essay that I sent through the commonapp to every school. It had to be about myself and I talked about, in a general way, how I would use college as an opportunity to grow as a person.

In the college specific supplement essays, I tried to be as specific as possible. In fact, for one of the schools I applied to I referenced a specific class and teacher. So yea, my essay was only about me and only talked about college in a broad sense, but my supplements were pretty specific and I think I showed great interest and knowledge about the schools I applied to through those essays.

The mid 50% for admitted students last year at Northeastern was 1970-2140. So you were just above the 25th percentile. Your GPA looks good. Not surprised you were deferred but you still have a chance RD. The fact that you were surprised by the NU deferral tells me you were thinking it was a safety, which it is not.

I didn’t think it was a safety. I thought I had a good chance though. Amongst my top 3 schools: NYU, GW, and NU, I thought I had the best chance of getting into NU. My school uses naviance as well and based on the graph I was above the average range of GPA/SAT of accepted students.

Sorry about NEU. I’m surprised you didn’t get in however. Someone from my school with similar statistics to yours didn’t get in either. Especially since I got in with only a 3.26 UW and 30 ACT shows how big of a crapshoot admissions is.
