Will there be many outlets to connect everything along with a surge protector. I'm bringing a lot of electronics: laptop, speaker system, monitor, floor lamp, printer...will I be good w/o an extension cord? Why are they prohibited even if I use a surge protector?

Edit: I'm in a single in 2nd floor Clara Dickson if that matters?

Is the dorm even big enough to warrant an extension cord? All the pictures I’ve seen of the interior of dorm rooms look like a regular surge protector + the product’s cord would do the trick.

The doubles/triples are definitely big enough. Also, if you have a bad outlet like I did, it might come in handy so you can use a farther outlet.

simple reason - fire code prohibits extension cords inside building for anything other than temporary use. However, so far as I know, no restriction on how long that cord on the power strip can be - and I’ve seen ones with 30’ cords. Also, if you have surge protectors, know that you can’t daisy chain them.

Extension cords are technically not allowed, but you can still bring them if you want. If you don’t leave them out during winter break, you should be fine. I DID hear about a random fire inspection once during the year though, but I didn’t have anything incriminatory out at the time.

In the case that they do find something, they’ll confiscate it and you can get it back if you will remove it immediately, or otherwise at the end of the year. It happened to me with a lamp that they classify as a “spider lamp”

That’s pretty much exactly what I had as a “butterfly lamp”. If it’s removable, then you’re fine, just remove it during winter break, because they check rooms during break.
