Why choose a prestigious university?

My eventual goal is to get accepted into med school and eventually become a doctor; I'm a high schooler as of now. I've been wondering... what is the point of going to a prestigious undergraduate university (like a top ten school) rather than a less prestigious one where I would receive more merit-based scholarships?

Something that several people alluded to but I think is important to point out is that you're still a highschool student. I have many friends who started off thinking that they wanted to become doctors and deciding that their true passion lay elsewhere. Go to a school that will offer you the opportunity to change your mind and grow as a person. I'm not necessarily saying that it has to be a 'prestigious' university (though it is hard to deny that they often have these advantages) but don't be blinded with the idea that you are for sure going to go to med school because its too early for you to tell.

So basically, a good pedigree keeps more doors open to you. A poor pedigree doesn't shut doors, but makes things more challenging.

Exactly. Unfortunately, many people enjoy citing some random superstar that they know from a less renowned university who made it into a top school/career opportunity... as if those exceptions to the rule are the norm.
