Why College Park?

I know most of the students who are offered a place at UM are offered places at other great Universities across the map.

What are some of the reasons that you beleive that the education and experiences at Maryland should be chosen over those of another school?

So basically, this is a thread to get all of those students who are interested in attending Maryland but are on the fence, an idea of why they might chose UM. Be honest and please try to stay on topic.

well, what made me like maryland the most was mostly because of its programs. i was invited to the honors program, and i feel like it could give me a lot of great opportunities. also, they have things like language house, and also business honors programs, etc. the campus is also really beautiful.

what also caught my eye was that it was a school that seemed to have a pretty friendly and down to earth atmosphere. i'm not sure about that, of course, but it has its sports school feel, but i don't feel like they party everyday (or ususally don't), or anything like that. i like a school that can play hard but study harder. so you've got the athletics, the academics, a beautiful campus, and a great location regarding its promixity to D.C. yes, college park isn't that great, and yeah i've heard it's not so safe, but..i wont be going around at night alone, so what the hell. overall, maryland is probably the best school i could go to.

It is great for business and journalism majors. I got into the business school directly and i won't have to worry about being denied admission into the business school in my junior year. I will have to worry about that at Wisconsin because it doesn't accept any freshmen. I am a sports fan and maryland is awesome for that.

does it actually make that big of a difference if you're not selected in college park scholars?

this is the only thing that's preventing me from chosing maryland. had i got into the scholars program, i'd have dumped penn state for maryland.

My S got admitted to UMD Honors and also got accepted (and/or received "likely" letters) by a few other big name universities. When we visited UMD CP a few weeks ago, we got impressed. S will visit only one more university before making his final decision which we all believe will be UMD. Why? Because of its big beautiful campus is at an acceptable distance from home with many places to visit (outside of CP). Because of its great engineering and honors programs, great research and internship opportunities, and great scholarship opportunities. After visiting (almost) all the universities on his list, S has not found one good reason that matters to him to prefer one of the other big name schools over UMD.

Of course, not everyone likes the same things the same way (which works out very well =) ). Each student has to find out what kind of environment and programs motivates them, not what others would think or do. Visiting the schools is very important. Ask questions, research and READ information about the school. I know that the process can be overwhelming, specially at the end of your senior year. Sit down, relax and visualize yourself in your school of choice surrounded by your new classmates. Do you have a smile on your face? Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? Are you still smiling? Are you parents? (the only other people that count - bias, I know)

Good Luck to All!!! ; )

My d got into the scholars and really wants to go there. Meanwhile, she got into Universiy of Richmond with financial aid. (lots) Richmond is supposedly a "better" school but she is very torn. They are completely different and we haven't heard anything about money yet from College Park and I 've heard they don't give out much financial aid. We live about 35 min from college park so it would make life easy...........Penn State is out as they only gave us about a thousand dollars in aid.............help!

well richmond is a liberal arts college so it is harder to compare the two but it is considered harder to get into and better from my understanding

Yes, it is considered "better" , whatever that is.........
