Why Columbia? For those who go to Columbia..

I'm trying to choose ivy league colleges and Columbia is one of the colleges on my list, but I need help as to what are the good things about Columbia? Why is Columbia better than other colleges?

My reasons are quite simplistic, but here goes:

a) I wanted to stay close to home, and I also love NYC.

b) I liked the core a lot because I love learning a bit of everything even if I'm not very interested in a subject (for example, I disliked AP Bio in high school, but I love having the knowledge of biology...sounds a bit weird I guess, but it's just the way I am). Art, Music, LitHum, major cultures, West Civ...I was interested in all of these! I would say the core was a major draw for me.

so basically. . . have knowledge to show off? Interesting idea, phantom. . .

when i went for a tour of columbia, my dad asked the tour guide what set columbia apart from the other ivies, stanford, etc. and she said all of them will provide you with a great education, no matter what, but columbia has a great education and a great location.

In the end, I declined Columbia's offer, but I can say that I applied there because of, well, the Core Program and the education. I've heard from my older friends the Core Program is a pain when it comes to scheduling, but the fact is, as phantom said, you learn about different things that you may have not been exposed to.

That knowledge really carries with you the rest of your life and the fact that you can understand, perhaps, a little about what music you're listening to at a concert or about the art that you're viewing at the museum -- it really pays dividends.

The reason I declined its offer was due to the money. I am pretty poor, and the fact that Columbia believed I could fork up $3,000 and have almost $7,000 in loans was pretty beyond me. Since I live in New York, I visited the campus a lot of times and let me tell you it's one of the prettiest campuses and it is really full of rich history.

knowledge to show off? not really...merely to know.

Columbia is known for its balanced liberal arts education, and as a prospective math/physics major who also loves literature and music and art and all that, I appreciate being able to leave Columbia educated in all of those.

Knowledge I'm missing includes famous people like singers and actors I should know about but don't, sports, movies, TV shows, and maybe some other basic things. I'll leave Columbia being even more lopsided than I am now. Yesss

lol (same goes for me in terms of famous singers and sports -- absolutely clueless)

consider joining the "I Was a Dorky Kid" facebook group...
