Why Columbia?

I really liked mediopollito’s and evertheoptimist’s responses! Good job, guys.

singapore —> Columbia '15… ?

^ I was admitted ED to Class of '14, but I’m deferring admission to '15.

As a New Yorker, I know exactly what I would be missing if I left New York to attend college. Columbia’s location offers unrivaled opportunities, opportunities that would help me mature as a person and future engineer. I also believe that Columbia’s core curriculum will allow me to develop in ways that an ordinary engineering college might not. By requiring me to study liberal arts, I become aware of my impact upon society. Combining this with my dream of becoming an aerospace engineer, Columbia might just be the only school that gives me the chance to literally reach for the stars.

Some of these are very good…a lot of them place emphasis on the core curriculum, along with the NYC campus…mine was more cliche, talking about professors and whatnot (i feel embarrassed!)…any others?

Well here’s mine, by the way WSU is a University I’m attending for duel credit and CERP was supposed to be CERC, :frowning: and it stood for Center of Environmental Research Conservation. Think the admissions officers will notice?

My dream is to work internationally as a Conservation Scientist. I like Columbia’s department of Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental
Biology because of its experienced professors and partnership with CERP. I like to picture myself working at the Bronx Zoo or at the NY
Aquarium. I also like Columbia’s Core Curriculum. Like Columbia, at WSU I am required to take core classes. At first, I was annoyed; I wanted
to get into my major! However, as I took classes like psychology and art, I found knowledge I could use in my everyday life and enjoyed it. I
am convinced Columbia is the school for me.

reading all of these is kind of making me nervous. i now realize how much better i could have made mine, and …meh. anyway, question:
do you guys think i could use the interview as an opportunity to like, show how much i really want to go to Columbia and maybe through the write-up my interviewer gives my ad-com person will actually realize that I AM IN LOVE with the school…?

Yah, but don’t be too much of a suck-up. I’d do my homework and then ask questions when I had my interview. Just don’t ask questions that you can get the answers off their website lol. Ask questions that show you’ve really looked into this school and know all about it, not just I love Columbia, you know the Ivy in NYC!

ahahaha but the location was a pretty big part of my dying to go. but yeah i know what you mean and i think you’re right…its next week! im excited!

By the way how did you get an interview, all I got was a generic letter from an Alumni. But maybe thats because I’m from Utah?

hmm…i got an email from an alumni offering an interview. i’m an international.

you had to have submitted your application before December 10th to get an interview. and if there isn’t an alumni who lives near your SCHOOL location, you won’t get one. (it’s not based on where you live.)

Not true, at least for the second part. The alumni I got interviewed by doesn’t live near my school location at all, and I’m sure the same is true for many.

well that’s what it says on the website. near the school…

word. mine lives 5 hours away…

Okay, just read it. Maybe same area as high school, but it doesn’t say Dec. 10th.

yeah i know, but that’s what everyone told me. and most of my friends who applied before then got an interview. i haven’t yet…and i submitted mine after…i hope it’s not true haha.

I submitted my first part December 13th and got contacted for an interview the 21st.
Then again, I live in NYC where I’m sure there are tons of Columbia grads living.

Here’s mine:

I first fell in love with Columbia University because of the scope and depth of its Core Curriculum, which advocates learning for the sake of learning. The Core allows you to cover everything from Michaelangelo and Haydn to Symbolic Logic and Swahili and I know that I would be a better person for it. Life at Columbia further enthralls me and I often smile when I imagine myself partaking in it: the chaos of Orgo Night, the hilarity of the Varsity Show, the primal screams of finals week, and the explorations of New York. For me, Columbia is nothing short of the ultimate undergraduate experience.

Your academics appeal to me particularly. The obvious connections between courses in the Core Curriculum and the Philosophy Department exemplifies integrated learning, and help confront the issue of perspectives all disciplines must presume. Your undergraduate arts program functions jointly with your Graduate School of the Arts, giving me additional resources as well as the insights older art students can offer. Finally, as a long-time reader of the Columbia Review, I appreciate the level of nuance and thoughtfulness demonstrated in this publication and want to contribute to its excellence.

…omg, a grammar error. “exemplifies” should be “exemplify”… facepalm

Someone told me not to talk about NYC and the Core because “liking NYC and the Core is more a pre-requisite for applying to Columbia than a reason.” So I just talked about other stuff.
