Why Cornell?

hey.. im a junior in high school..looking around.

i dont know much about cornell. ive been to the website and seen the "facts" and stuff but i want to hear something from actual students..

if youre a current student:
why did you choose cornell?
fav thing?
least fav?
hows life outside of class?
profs?
is it ridiculously difficult to get in?
...

if youre applying:
why?
where else are you considering?

i chose cornell, i wonder why to this day...i guess b/c its an ivy (do not make this type of decision), closer to my home than the other places i got into (Chicago, NW, Rice, and Duke)
fav thing: um...have to think about this
least fav: HUGE, and way 2 many undergrads
life is actually good outside of class, u will get those kids that are studying on friday and sat nights and others who are partying
professors, seem really engaged in their work, but are all willing to meet during office hours or outside to accomidate their students
um...i dont think its ridicuously difficult to get in, i feel that if u have the right stats (generally, a 1400+ and you make yourself seem interesting), i think you have a great shot

thanks!
yeah i really really really like both duke and rice. duke is probably my first choice.

the problem is i want to apply everywhere. :/ I'm having trouble narrowing the list down. How many colleges do people normally apply to?

Here's mine so far..

Duke
Rice
Emory
Yale
Williams
Stanford
UNC
UM (safety?)
Harvard
Amherst (?)
Columbia (?)
NYU (?)
Cornell (?)

Goodness.. I don't know where to start. Any suggestions?

ok im a junior in hs too
my list is:
Notre Dame
Cornell
Rice
Emory

Reasons for all is they all have nanolabs and biochem

awesome :)

i'm not sure what i want to study..
I've been thinking of maybe International Affairs/Relations/Business.. something like that. Political science..Maybe something with law..
Minor in french.. ( i speak spanish also..)

Pretty much, I just want to do something that involves a lot of traveling. I love culture and languages.

Hm. This whole college thing is crazy.

my international affairs do you mean a spy? whenever i ask someone that they say no but there has to be someone that thinks thats what it means.....

hahah its just like world affairs and relations..
a career might be like a consulate or somethingish? i dont know.

i would LOVE to be a spy, though!

I'm applying because I loved the campus, and ILR is what I want to study. Seemed like a perfect fit for me.

ok......one wink means yes spy two means no..............just between you and me

Is that UM University of Maryland or University of Michigan (or somewhere else)? If that's Maryland, that's probably a pretty good safety, but if its Michigan, that's definitely not a safety.

Also, maybe narrow down your list by doing things like picking between NYU and Columbia (unless you really want to go to school in NYC)...or deciding on whether you want a LAC or big university (Stanford vs. Williams).

I've seen none of your stats, but maybe Wake Forest could be a good match school? Duke is a reach for anyone and UNC-CH is a reach for pretty much anyone out-of-state.

Anyway, I chose to apply early to Cornell this year b/c:
(1) Perfect distance from home (5 hours)...I will be in a totally new environment but can still easily drive home on holidays
(2) Considered the top engineering program in the Ivies...and also maybe the easiest to get into
(3) Location...I like to snowboard and there is plenty of snow and mountainous terrain nearby.

if youre a current student:
why did you choose cornell? My initial reasons were because a friend had gotten in ED (I was a lazy bum and only ended up apply to 5 of the hardest schools to get into, with no safety. I considered UCSD a safety even though I was from out-of state. that's how wacked out I was)
fav thing? Endless list...
APPLE CIDER/dining halls,
the 24 hour libraries (but I love the Mann library, they have individual rooms that I could study in without distraction, but still have the breathtaking few of campus if I was on the 4th floor and facing beebe lake),
the hills (it used to be a drag, but going up Libe Slope every day at 8:30AM really wakes me up, and makes me think I'm getting into shape a little)
which leads to a wonderful view when I'm going down the hill
the research (I'm doing research on Down Syndrome...unfortunately one of my mice died yesterday because of kidney stones :( and another research project on Sex Ed in teens) I had the opportunity to go on 2 other research project, but I had to pick my two favorite and that it would supplement my future goals (to do PhD in clinical psych)
the parties (although I'm not that great anymore since it's getting cold, and I don't like walking there and back in a cute but very skanty outfit that's sooo cooold)
TRAYING! when the snow hits :)
gorge jumping! only in the beginning of fall and very late spring/early summer
many many many organizations to choose from
and many more...
least fav?
endless fees for everything ... booo!!
it's in the middle of everything...usually 4-6 hours from a metropolitan like NYC, philly, boston, toronto, montreal)
small tiny disappointing mall
upperclassmen have to live on West or CT (I want to live in the Townhouses)
CT is really really expensive
cornell charges an arm/leg for food and everything
lugging my big umbrella around because you never know when it will rain

hows life outside of class?
no complaints. too many things to do, makes it slightly hard to budget your time if you have a lot of activities you want to partake in, and have a paper/prelim or both due the following week.
profs?
most are awesome and very approachable. 3/4 of mine this semester have been entertaining in class.
is it ridiculously difficult to get in?
I don't think so. I applied 2 weeks after the deadline and got into Arts & Science. however, I was a disadvantaged girl, applying as a Math major who got 800 on her Math SAT I, 750 on Math IIC, and 100s on my math regents.

since then, have realized that the math department at cornell tends to not discriminate against people who cannot speak english, found all my sources (prof, TA, and book) to speak foreign languages that are barely decipherable, and have switched to HE. I'm glad because I realize I'm very people oriented, and would rather work with people than numbers. but, who knows if I would have gotten in Cornell if I got initially gone HE. I was so stupid applying to colleges. at that time, I thought Engineering was "conductor" school like being a train engineer (which is weird I know) but I didn't research or do anything. that's one of my biggest regret, but thankfully, it didn't hurt me too much obviously.

if youre a current student:
why did you choose cornell? It's the only place I wanted to go (and the only place I applied). The campus is gorgeous, the in-state tuition is nice and the people are generally cool (some of them ;)). I also like being in the middle of nowhere, for some strange reason. Hmm...I basically decided I had to go here and nowhere else after seeing the campus last Summer. And um, it's also an amazing school, let's not forget that part.
fav thing?
Endless free beer at parties, perhaps.
Walking around aimlessly
The weather, though most people wouldn't agree
Overall hockey obsession
The school's big size
Appel dining...it's strange, fries seem to taste better when they're curly
The overall pride in Cornell (except for disgruntled Harvard rejects...and also, Bball87, my favorite facebook hunter-downer...who the hell are you? while I'm at it ;))

least fav?
How people are way too uptight about political correctness, but think it's perfectly acceptable to say "retard" but not "gay"
The workload :)
The fact that everyone works too hard, throwing off the curve and preventing me from indulging in my lazy ways
9 AM class
Having 9 hours of classes on Thursdays, courtesy of my 3 hour gym class

hows life outside of class?
It's great...if you have friends and go out and stuff, otherwise, I suppose your life would suck, but that is applicable to any college, not only Cornell

profs?
3 of them are good...my math professor is amazing because she loves math so damn much. I used to hate math until I took her class, now I tolerate it. My chem professor is funny, but tries way too hard and needs to stop talking about viagra and banging chicks, it's past the point of creepiness. My sociology teacher is cool too, I really like the class and it's basically a free A+, if you do the reading. My evolutionary biology professor is the most boring man ever and thoughts of the sound of his voice make me not want to walk 15 minutes to his class at 8:30 in the morning.

is it ridiculously difficult to get in?
No, but it's obviously not easy. 1400 won't guarantee you admissions, but it helps.
