Why Cornell?

I was thinking about applying to Cornell, but I don't really know much about it, even with a honest perusal of the website.

Can anyone here who loves Cornell tell me why you love it?

Thanks. :)

I’m a freshman at Cornell and I LOVE it. It’s such a beautiful location and Ithaca is an awesome little college town. I love that it’s so big - there are so many friendly people and so much diversity - and yet close-knit, I know so many people already and people go to similar places. The parties are great. There are so many different things to do at any given time - I was never ever bored. Wide range of interesting classes to choose from, and despite some of the scare stories I heard before coming here, it’s not so hard to get good grades, nor have I found it to be a pressure cooker in my personal experience (having said which, I’m not pre-med or engineering). Even the weather is not so bad - I got home about a week ago and so have only seen one day of snow this semester…in fact, for the most part it’s been really gorgeous and sunny (although I’m from Seattle so I guess it’s all relative…). The only thing I don’t like so much is how stressed out everyone gets, but I’m a ridiculously laid back person so again, it’s relative. But yeah, it’s awesome.

As a freshman, this is the first and only college I’ve attended so I can’t really make any useful comparisons.

With that said, I do truly like it here - probably more because of my friends that anything else.

Location, academics, and people.

Once you get to Cornell, the location is great. In the summer and early fall it is so nice. Then with the leaves changing it is so nice. Then with the snow coming down as you study for finals it is so nice. And the campus is so huge that there is always somewhere new to go. Most people (at least as freshmen) don’t seem to go into Ithaca too much, but the town is pretty nice too.

Somehow, the people at Cornell are great. The staff are so friendly and helpful. You won’t suffer from an “inefficient, bureaucratic” big college. The university runs very well. The students are almost all very friendly, interesting, intelligent, fun, and definitely not elitist. It’s hard to go back to not being around Cornellians.

And for basically any major, you can expect a great education. Maybe this is possible at other top universities, too. It’s hard to say.

Go to Cornell if you can. You won’t regret (I don’t think I’ve met a single person who doesn’t like it).

dean5150- u hit the nail on the head. I went to cornell voer the summer for the summer college (im in high school) and was there with amazing, smart, talented, fun kids. I came back and have not been content with my home crowd since. It really is hard to stop being around cornellians. (technically they werent cornellians, but msot had dreams of attendign cornell, and realized those dreams last week.)

…really? which college are you in? bc i’m in CALS and i work for a dept in CAS and it’s probably the most bureaucratic bs i’ve ever seen. it’s ridiculous how inefficient funds are allocated from a departmental standpoint. AND they charge you for EVERYTHING.

Of course you can’t expect everything to be perfect, but compared to any other colleges that have even half the number of students as Cornell, you can expect Cornell to be much better in this area. You have to see the nonsense that happens at other universities - stuff I haven’t seen at all at Cornell. (except student center, which sucks)

I don’t, but I expect better from Cornell. Maybe it IS less bureaucratic than other colleges that have similar numbers, but hey - it’s Cornell, and when you think of the many resources we have, we should be far more efficient and waste less time/money. Try working for a department under accounts/grants and you’ll see just how *****ed up Cornell’s bureaucracy really is.

Granted, from a student’s standpoint, it’s not so bad, because, let’s face it - all we need is handled BY the administrative staff, and the problems/inefficiencies are hidden REALLY well by them. But when you’re an administrative staff, Cornell makes you go absolutely bonkers!
