Just wondering why you guys chose Dartmouth as one of your top choices. I recently received a likely letter and am practically 100% sure I am going to go. =)

The D-Plan: i plan on interning with my family friend’s company in spring or winter of one year, when most other people vying for internships would be in school

The Community: i loved the small town and the feeling like i could walk everywhere, something really important to me in a campus

Environmentally Friendly Aspects: with the farms and student run organizations, dartmouth definitely has plenty of these to meet my needs/interests

Ability to Double Major: some schools (ex. princeton) only let you get a certificate, but at dartmouth you can double major AND minor, which is my plan if i get accepted

Focus on Undergrads: this is super important to me, and given that they are already a small school AND focus on undergrads, i know i would be getting a lot of attention for the next 4 years

to be honest, there are plenty of other reasons. i just loved the feeling when i visited, like everyone WANTED to be there. its seriously my dream school. so lucky you, for getting the LL. :)

you say that nowwwwww :)

Apparently it has very good financial aid, is a well-rounded good school, small classes. So I applied.

Why I applied to Dartmouth (Likely Letter recipient :))

Smallest ivy (LAC feel) entailing small classes, focus on undergrads

Excellent FA

In the northeast where all but one of the schools on my list are (besides my 3 state schools)

Good school rep (alumni) which will make making the right connections and starting off my career easier

the school rep who visited my school told us about the quarter system plan and explained how beneficial it is towards getting an internship; I was intrigued

My restraints are the whole greek/drinking image which I’m sure is overblown but nonetheless present, and although I haven’t visited the school, I don’t know if I would fit in as a minority. My top 2 other ivy choices were Yale (geared towards it all my life, applied) and Columbia (all I have to say is NYC, did not apply). The debate now for me is Dartmouth or Georgetown (which will come down to better FA or better for my major int’l relations)

I recently received a likely letter too!!!
I love the smallness, the intimacy and the sense of community. I love the ski slopes, the isolation and the small classes. I love that Dartmouth is like one great, beer-drinking, intellectual family. I love that Dartmouth will allow me to cultivate my ardent passion for biology with accessible professors and great academics. I LOVE everything about Dartmouth and I especially love that they want ME…

Vox clamantis in deserto

D-plan, Rassias learning method, alumni network, general feel of an ivy

D-plan (AMAZING access to internships)+ amazing alumni network.

Am I the only person who saw the D-Plan as a downside? You’re never on break at the same time as anyone from other schools, and the billing system per term is confusing.

Anyway, my reasons other than those already stated:

Rural setting, so the outdoors and a chance to meet lots of people. Beautiful campus. A chance to see snow without dying of cold. Friendly people and tons of school spirit.
The Dartmouth Family: the alumni who really seem to care about current students and try to give them opportunities.

what DONT you like about dartmouth? Besides the weather there are obviously some bad things…what are they?

ggarcia2014: I’m also a minority(I’m a black hispanic. Think david ortiz, manny ramirez, and other dominican baseball players.) and so seeing how other minorities fit in was very important in my college search. Surprisingly, Dartmouth was the most diverse and had the best mix( and by diverse and best mix, i mean not so much numbers, but the opposite of self-segregation) than any other college I had visited, even Columbia which always gets a good rep for being diverse. I guess I thought because it was in the middle of New Hampshire and because it had a strong greek scene that there would be a lot of self-segregation, but I was pleasantly surprised. I have also heard from someone on here who was black and who had many issues with the greek system at Dartmouth that the one thing that she did like about it was how much minorities were accepted at fraternities and sororities. So that would be a big plus for you if you plan to party as much as I am haha.

I don’t like Dartmouth because of all the drinking. Drugs are better, imo.

The weather is horrid. But everything else is AMAZING.

I saw the weather as an upside!

Skiing?! Yes please ( :

I guess my perspective is different since I’m from the west coast.

But definitely the D-Plan was the biggest selling point for me. Some people work better under the quarter system instead of semester, and I’m definitely one of those people. The possibility of internships because of the D-Plan structure is really exciting.

I got likely letters as well (one from Dartmouth and one from Cornell) but I am completely undecided as to whether or not I am going to choose Dartmouth. I’m still waiting for my options to become clear next Thursday. Any thoughts on Dartmouth versus Cornell?

While they’re both rural, I think they have some important differences. Cornell is, I think, the biggest of the Ivies, in terms of population. Dartmouth is tiny. Dartmouth has a reputation for being a fun school, with a lot of frat parties and drinking. Cornell has a reputation for being a pressure cooker, “the easiest Ivy to get into and the hardest to get out of.”

I think I’d choose Dartmouth, to the great disappointment of my mother (Cornell '76).

Lightzout: Wow thanks it’s great to hear that. I know that the northeast definitely has a lot less minorities than I’m used to here in Houston but its nice to know that being a minority at a school in rural New Hampshire won’t affect my college experience. I’m not a party party person but I could sure learn to be one from time to time ;P

What about the Summer Internships at Dartmouth? Do they help the students arrange summer programs or similar overseas?

Heard that Boston have summer programs in Europe and Asia…

Career services, Dickey, Rocky, and Tucker all have resources to help students arrange internships or other leave term experiences, whatever term that is.

Thanks so much, your response is actually really helpful
