Why did all of those OVERachievers tell me I probably couldn't do it? INTERESTING...

Back in July, I'd post my stats on here for various schools and would usually hear that most of the schools I was interested in were reaches and I should only apply to the arts & sciences/general schools for each. Here are my stats...

From NJ

GPA: 3.17 (freshman year - 3.115, soph year - 2.995, 3.4 junior year)

SAT: 730 CR, 610 M, 710 W (1340/2050)

Student Council President

Class Council Representative

ERASE Club Vice President (End Racism and Sexism Everywhere)

Some other things...
- Employed at the local CVS since May 2009
- 2 Year Writer for School Newspaper
- 2 Year Key Club Member
- 2 Years of Basketball
- 1 Year of Football
- URM (African-American)
- Volunteering... probably a total of 20 hours...

Senior Schedule (excluding Phys Ed.):

Economics
Phys Ed.
Probability/Statistics
Law
Language Arts IV
World Civilization Honors (Academic Elective)

And I've taken one other honors course during my time in high school -- last year, French IV Honors. In LA, there are four levels. Basic, college preparatory, high ability, and honors. I've been in/am in the high ability track if you were wondering/wanted extra info...

Anyway, the schools I applied to are.

Rutgers - New Brunswick
Binghamton
James Madison University
Virginia Tech
University of Pittsburgh

I've heard back from VT, Pitt, and Rutgers. I applied to both the arts & sciences and business schools of VT & Rutgers, and just arts & sciences for Pitt... and was accepted to all of them. I'm just posting this on here to show that even people with low GPAs/maybe haven't tried that hard in school, can get into solid schools too.

made. my. day. thanks :)

Lol, glad to have done soo!

wow that’s inspiring! your essays must have been excellent and you improved a lot from sophomore to junior year.
thank you for this  admissions really ARE more than just grades, scores, and ECs but it’s also a bit about WHO YOU ARE as a person and if the admissions committees truly believe you’ll fit in there

Exactly. Being the total-package/right-fit for the schools you’re applying to is most important.

“Not trying hard” really isn’t anything to boast about.

I wasn’t boasting. I was stating a fact - that I hadn’t worked up to my potential, because unfortunately, not everyone does/makes that extra effort.

You’re cool.
