Why did/didn't you apply to the schools you chose?

I saw this thread in a different forum, but its a few years old, and I decided to make a new one for those of you in the Class of 2016!
Feel free to share your stories! Here's mine:

I only applied to Vanderbilt because it had no extra essay in its supplement, and it looked like a cool school.
I didn't apply to Georgetown because it wasn't part of the Common Application and I was too lazy to do the entire thing over again.
I applied to WUSTL because my dad told me to, and it had no extra essay..haha.
I didn't apply to Boston U because I felt it wasn't that great of a school, but now i regret it!
I didn't apply to Colgate because it'd be weird to say I went to a toothpaste university...

I didn’t apply to MIT/Georgetown because they weren’t on the Common App.

There’s a thread sort of like this (Dumbest reason you did/didn’t apply to a school, I believe it’s called), as your mentioned. I guess this is the more serious version haha.
SUNY Oneonta: My uncle went there, needed a safety (Got in with scholarship… never even visited it, haha. Not too smart on my part.)
Skidmore: First college I visited, the people were really nice and my photography teacher went there.
U of Michigan: Two of my closest friend’s parents went there. Good academics and arts program. Haven’t visited yet, but going to accepted students day this spring break.
Mt. Holyoke: Everyone was extremely friendly and nice. Pretty campus, too. (But SO expensive!)
Alfred University: I did a summer program there and had a ton of fun. It’s in the middle of nowhere, but its art program is amazing!
WUSTL: Aunt went there, another family member lives in St. Louis. (No supplements were also a bonus, lol!)
-Didn’t apply to Boston University because I visited it during a summer heat wave. That just rubbed me the wrong way. Stupid reason, I know hahaha.
-Didn’t apply to RISD because it was raining that day and I got all wet on the campus tour (again, stupid reason haha.)
-Didn’t apply to Lafayette because the tour guide didn’t know much about the college.
-Didn’t apply to Muhlenberg because its visiting day was too crowded.
…Lmao. My reasons for not applying are so silly haha. But in the end, I’m I think still have a bunch of colleges on my list that I would be very happy at. :)

Princeton: sounded pretentious
Harvard: same as above
Gtown: don’t like DC
Cornell: hearsay, and I’m not really that into the “ivy hype”
Dartmouth: someone goes there I don’t want to see again… lol
UPenn: Didn’t think I would feel right there.
WUSTL: didn’t know enough about it.
USC: Without BA/MD I didn’t want to do it.
Amherst: My brother told me there is extremely heavy drinking.
Tufts: I didn’t like it when I visited.

I disagree, I think that even if there are stupid trivial reasons that unnerve you about a school will undoubtedly stay with you throughout. In my experience, it was these little things that allowed me to shorten my college list.

Duke- My dad’s been a Duke basketball fan since '83 so in the beginning I applied for him. Now, I’m really leaning toward it and I hope my dad and I can don the blue paint and see a game together.

Williams- I like the small campus feel and entry system, although it does bother me that it’s in such a small, rainy town.

Brown- I just wanted to see if I could get into an Ivy.

Emory- Didn’t apply because I visited back in ninth grade and I barely remembered why I liked it so I just decided not to.

University of Notre Dame- Strictly for their Film, Television and Theatre major. I’m not Catholic (actually, I’m not particularly all that religious) and I wish it were more diverse but they offered what I wanted so I decided to go for it.

Clemson- didn’t apply just because I hate the school colors. Stupid, but oh well. And it’s in-state and I kind of want to leave home.

Loyola University New Orleans- The application was free and it was rolling admission. Got in and they offered me a full merit scholarship covering room, board, and tuition. I visited New Orleans when I was a freshman and loved it so the location definitely mattered to me.

University of Pittsburgh- THEY WOULDN’T STOP SENDING ME MAIL. And the application was free and rolling admission, so I just went ahead and did it.

Why I applied to…

American - Since I’m pretty set on doing International Relations, going to school in DC seemed like a must. I didn’t realize that American was the best “fit” for me until about a week and a half before the app deadline though, lol.

Loyola Marymount - At the time I thought I wanted to go to school in LA yet wasn’t sure about USC, so I visited both and favored LMU more. The size of the student population and the school’s beautiful location was why I applied.

San Diego State - I’m not a fan of large schools, but location + academics + school spirit = why I applied.

Oregon - The school is so lovely! Also, same as above.

Loyola New Orleans - Free app and rolling admission. Plus, I really like the city of New Orleans.

University of San Francisco - Their viewbook design is SO pretty. I love the city of San Francisco too, so I couldn’t resist.

St. Mary’s College of California - They sent me an email the day before the deadline saying they’d waive my app fee if I applied before midnight, so I did haha. I had also heard their basketball team was really good, which was another reason I applied (I’m a huge sports fan).

University of the Pacific - My mom is friends with my adcom, and after talking with her I didn’t have the heart to not apply.

Why I didn’t apply to…

USC - The school was my “dream school” since freshman year, but after visiting I really couldn’t see myself there. At all. I’m still a trojan fan for life, though.

UCLA - Ha. No.

Other UC schools - Not diverse enough for my standards = no.

Stanford - Stanford was the first college (aside from USC) that made me determined to get into a good college. Howver, halfway into my junior year I realized that I would never be accepted and did not want to pay $90 for a rejection. Stanford is an amazing school nonetheless, and I have no regrets about not applying.

Notre Dame - I didn’t think the school was diverse enough for me.

Lehigh - My ex boyfriend goes there. Haha.

Wash U - Ugh… the mailings… I sent the supplement but ended up withdrawing because I realized how much I couldn’t stand the school.

College of Wooster - My teacher graduated from there and a close friend attends, and I initially thought the school would be a good fit (plus I had heard their financial aid package is great!) but in the end decided the school was not for me. Plus, I’m afraid of kilts.

Santa Clara - I emailed my adcom in my junior year about the application process and she was SO rude, so I didn’t even bother.

Syracuse - I’m in love with the school, but their essays completely turned me off. My cousin also plays on their basketball team, and a lot of my west coast family members attend, but I just couldn’t stand the supplement… Oh well. Go big orange!

Vanderbilt - My mom almost made me apply because they had no supplement essay, but I was absolutely against applying for personal reasons.

Emory - My mom almost made me apply ED2 because my uncle lives in Atlanta and she wanted me to be around family. As I was writing the supplement essays, I realized how much I didn’t even like Emory so I didn’t send the application.

Auburn - Mom’s alma mater. I love the school (War Eagle!), but…it’s mom’s school, so no thank you.

Alabama - No. Just no.

George Washington - I thought I liked the school at first, but I just wasn’t impressed with it as much as I was with American.

Louisville - My cousin on my mom’s side is a star on their basketball team. When we were younger, he tripped me and I landed on a plate of chocolate cake. The grudge is still being held. :)

Duke - My pseudo-celebrity athlete crush (Austin Rivers <3) goes to Duke. Other than that, the school never really appealed to me. Especially the fans.

Vassar - I really liked this school, but I missed the deadline. Heh.

Tufts - The mascot. No.

Goodness. Such trivial reasons as to why I didn’t apply to some colleges, lol. I also didn’t realize this post would be so long. I’m happy with the school I’ll be attending in the fall, though. :)
