why did everyone get 8's on their essay?

I didn't take December or January, but a bunch of my friends did. For some reason, everyone got an 8. I thought they wrote really solid essays. They mostly used 2 examples, not three. They filled up 1.5 pages.
Is there a new trend where the essay graders won't give higher than an 8 unless you have 3 examples?

I used 3 examples, not 2. Got a 10. It was pretty bad too.

Use 3 examples, it helps a lot!

I used one personal anecdote. Filled up 2 pages. No special vocab. 12.

^yeah, i’ve heard that you only need 2 examples but i used 3 and got a 10 too, so i don’t know…

i used 3 strong example, 12. but my mc sucked.

I used two strong examples and thought that I would get at least a ten, but got a 9

Fill up the page, use clear, varied sentences, vocab.

Easy 11 for me. I wish I didn’t include a personal experience example though because that definitely dragged my score down a point.

I used two personal examples and got a 12. I was suprised since I didn’t use historical/literary facts.

It is not necessary to use 3 examples. I used two historical examples, implicitly stated something that contradicted my thesis, but used relatively varied vocabulary. I got a 12. Also, I filled up both pages completely; I literally could not fit another word onto my essay.

I used only one strong example, filled up about 1.75 pages. I thought it was 10/11 material. I ended up with an 8. ■■■ cuz I had an 80 MC.
All of my other friends got 8s too. What is up with that?

hmm, i thought 12’s were supposed to be only for amazing essays… i know a lot of people who aced the MC’s but were dragged down by their essay as well…

I filled up both pages, had two well thought out, well connected examples, good hooks/vocab, etc. and still got a low score :frowning: (I assume–I cannot seem to find my score, but I pretty sure I did well on the MC).

I used one example, but dragged it out a lot and got a 10.

It was the essay about thinking. First paragraph was an introduction, second was to state that history class was to learn from others in the past and talked about the Treaty of Versailles and how Germany had to pay something like $33 billion. Third paragraph showed that Hitler refused to pay this – led to WW2 – then in the fourth paragraph I said countries give money so there is no more escalation to conflict – countries dont have to dig themselves out of a hole sorta thing. Then I concluded and received a 10. All of this is not factually correct, but one well developed example does receive high marks. I also didn’t have time to proofread it, so grammatical errors may weigh me down as well.

I got a 10 used two examples.

If you think of the essay in terms of using X examples of y and z kind, throw in a couple of big words, fill two pages and that’s it…you get at least an 11, you are completely missing the point. Read the posts and you will see that for every “rule” someone will have an exception. That’s because the essay really is about your ability to think and to put your thoughts on paper well. One example, three examples, personal history, global history, factual info, fictional info… it doesn’t really matter. Think and write like an educated person and you will do well.

I got the same scores as awang. 12 essays MC meh = relatively decent Writing scores.

I used 0 solid examples and 3 “reasons” backed by personal experiences. 12’ed that ****.

I got a 12! :o
I only used 2 examples. They were both historical ones. My essay WASN’T all that great, I didn’t think so but hey, they liked it

I got a 12. Suck on that!

I feel insecure about my 11 now.

Not really, but it seems like everyone else got a 12. :)
