Why did Harvard call me? (to apply the 2011 class)

I received a phone call from Harvard. The person asked me if I have questions on the finanical stuff that Harvard sent me a month ago. I'm not sure what made Havard to call me, SAT I, PSAT, SAT II, AP, or ACT.

You probably appear to be in a category of students that Harvard is trying to recruit. For instance, you could be an underrepresented minority or live in an area that indicates you are low income.

Harvard wishes to boost or maintain its numbers of those categories of students, who can be hard to recruit because the number of such students who meet Harvard's admissions standards is relatively low.

The call doesn't mean that you're a shoo-in for Harvard. It simply means that based on a little data (possibly your PSAT score plus info about your zip code or race), Harvard thinks you might have a chance of admission. If you decide to apply, do a careful job using tips you can find on this site. Make sure, too, you have safety and match schools that you'd love to attend,.

My S, a URM and H legacy got a call from Harvard last year and also got several mailings from them. He and I knew that while his scores are stellar, his grades were below a 3.0 unweighted, so he had no chance of getting admitted and didn't bother to apply. The person who called him, however, didn't know about his grades -- probably was only calling from a list culled from high scoring URMs.

ohh i got a call too, from a guy named roger. hmm, im considering applying... just for the heck of applying to see if i get in.

NSM is right.

Harvard has two offices of students calling either high-scoring URMs or people interested in Harvard's financial aid initiative and encouraging them to apply. The people calling don't know your grades/scores, nor do we have any hand in deciding whether you'll be admitted. But we ARE a great source of information about Harvard, both before you apply and after/if you are accepted.

lol. That is how H gets to claim they are very selective because so many kids apply there for the heck of it!

i want a call from harvard...

"That is how H gets to claim they are very selective because so many kids apply there for the heck of it!"

So many kids apply /everywhere/ for the heck of it.

i decided to apply to harvard solely to see if i could get in and actually convinced myself that i wouldnt go even if i did. i'd never visited the campus and knew very little about it; however, to my disbelief, i actually got in and now im going in the fall. i knew two people who were called...one got in and another didnt. i agree with nsm...but it definitely is a sign that you should at least apply and then consider your options.

haha, i feel the same way as you, bwmid12. what made you decide to go to harvard?

its funny you should say that... I was going to do the same thing, telling myself that if I got in I wouldn't go... but I quickly realized that the pressure on me to go would've been to great, so I decided not to even apply... congrats bwmid12!!!

saxfreq, I think most people would agree that the one school that kids apply to even though they are fully aware they have no shot at its Harvard... no school gets more Hail-Mary applications than they do... which is just to their(your) credit, I think.

I know Roger! He's my blockmate - and also a great friend - and is working with us for the admissions office this summer.

I got a call too. the guy explained that they called anyone who had sent in a reply card.

That's only the case for people being called by the financial aid initiative. The other staff works a bit differently.

Yeah, Roger's a fun guy.

it came down to harvard and the combined med program Union/AMC that also allowed me to get an MBA. its close to home, i have a lot of personal connections (alumni father and friends) there, opportunity to do 3 sports and i also got about a 1/2 scholarship. however, harvard, i felt gave me the opportunity to go to a "better" med school. the way i saw it was that i wanted as many options as i wanted getting out of med school in terms of residency placement. AMC, while a tier 2 med school with decent matches, did not nearly compare to the top 25 med schools to which harvard sends a majority of its premeds. if i can tough it out as a premed athlete (non-recruited btw) i think ill have a good shot to get where i want. also, cambridge is amazing, the culture of harvard>>>>>union and the ladies love the mystique of getting with a harvard boy (haha jk! that would be a lame reason). but i strongly encourage everyone to apply to at least one school that is seemingly very far out of reach because you just really never know; however, do not allow yourself to fall in love with it (a strange situation i know), i saw a lot of people get crushed when they got denied from schools they had little shot at but were sold on.

i got my call yesterday : D

I know Roger, too! He was my host during Prefrosh.

At any rate, I never got any calls from Harvard until after I was admitted, so don't feel discouraged if you don't hear from them.
