okay.. Penn State was supposed to be a safety school for me. I do not understand why I was accepted but I have to start during the summer. Will someone please help me?

These are my stats:
Okay so i go to a really prestigious all girl catholic school. We do not rank or get an unweighted GPA. I have about a 3.6 GPA right now, but only because my freshman year was 3.1. i proceeded to increase my GPA all 4 years with each semester higher and higher (1st semester senior year was 3.9), junior year being 3.8, etc. Freshman year really killed me.
SAT scores: 660M + 650R+ 650W
SAT 2: 610 Physics (which sucked); 670 Math level 2
Passionate essays
Excellent teacher recs

I have a bunch of EC activities, I have been on Varsity Tennis for 8 seasons now (both fall and spring every year since Freshman year) & was named all-county, etc. + captain for 2 seasons
I've hosted charity events for the Children's Inn.
I am in student government.
Physics Olympics (haha nerdy..)
I am in a group that runs all the clubs at school.
Theres a bunch more but I think you get the point.

so can anyone help me out? maybe penn state was just extra hard to get into this year... please explain!

i sent in my application around november 1st. and to lil killer129, i know your opinions won't change my admit. but i just want to know if there is anyone else like me or if i just underestimated penn state. i wasnt trying to change it.

November 1st is pretty late for Penn State. I read this year they didn't admit as many as in prior years because of the housing shortage. I bet if you sent your application say in September, you would have had no problem. Also are you instate or out of state? That might make a difference if you are not from PA. My D is a sophmore at Penn State, and your stats are higher then hers. But we are a PA resident, and she sent her application in, in August. She made sure they had everything in by the end of September. Are you considering the summer program? My D had many friends who started the summer and loved it.

Yeah I would've applied earlier, but my school is so slow and is always so behind on the process! I was the first one to apply to any school out of my whole class. It might have even been before November 1st, maybe mid October. But since i sent it before November 30, I figured I would be okay. Thank you for your input. I am considering the summer program, but I am also looking at Maryland too. I am out of state for Penn State, since I live in Maryland. I was just very confused when an admission person called me and was like "you have been admitted for summer... etc."

That is fairly odd. I have around the same credentials as you with a 4.0/1100. My GPA is slightly higher because I go to an easy High School, and my SAT is slightly lower than yours. I also applied around the same time; I had everything in by November 1-2. I heard back from the college of engineering on December 3. Did you happen to apply to a prestigious program/major?

Nope! I'm pretty sure i applied to the Physical Sciences and Mathematics. And I don't think those were anything special haha. I did not receive a decision until February, which was quite annoying. I asked the admissions person about this and he basically disregarded it. The whole situation was so strange!

Latida-- Your major basically sums everything up. I'm sure meterology is a VERY competitive major at penn state considering it's a known fact that 1 out of every 4 meterologists in the world come out of penn state.... so that probably explains your summer admit. If you are really interested in going to penn state I would really consider the summer program. I know a few people that went through it and they loved it. It does take a summer away but it gets you familiar with people, the campus, environment and the major and the school in general. Good luck!

Hmmn........your stats look great so interesting that you were accepted for Summer.

November is late though so that's probably the reason. My child is a freshman up there...loves it.... and sent in application in September I believe.

The good news is that you will absolutely positively love the summer at Penn State. The Arts Festival, lots of things going on in a not too crowded environment.

The days of thinking that an offer to Penn State University Park as a "safety" choice are over. The branch campuses, on the other hand, are much easier to get in to and at the end of the 4 years....it's the same degree.

Good luck and have a wonderful summer if you chose Penn State!

I was told by an admissions person that Penn State had over 120,000 applications this year for less than 7,000 places. It definitely isn't a safety school anymore.

Ill be up there this summer, and I can't wait. From what Ive heard from past and current students, is that summer at Penn State is even better than it is during the fall and spring. They say there's just a relaxing feeling about it.
