So in December I had made several calls to the admissions office. To sum it up, they went like this.

I: Can I apply for financial aid?
O: We don't give fin aid to internationals.
I: Never mind then.
O: Also, you need to show us a $40,000 bank statement to prove that you can pay.
I: I don't have $40,000.
O: We can't process your application until you show us the money.
I: Fine, I'm withdrawing my application. Give me back my $70 application fee.
O: You can't have it back, we already processed your application.
I: But you just said you couldn't process it.
O: We can't accept you until you show us $40,000.
I: ........

Was this why I'd been rejected? Or was I just not good enough to be accepted anyway? Please tell me.

um yeah, i think this is why u were rejected, because verything else seems fine.
did u say "fine..."in a rude tone, that really would turn them away.

i know i would be extremely angry about something like this... but state schools are definitely in restricted situations. i've lived in florida for 3 years (basically all of HS) and won't get the in-state scholarship that almost every resident graduate gets - because they don't consider me a 'resident' on a ridiculous basis. it's all just really technical stuff that leaves a few unlucky and unhappy.

The following is my opinion of your circumstances. I write to be helpful. Please do not consider this to be a personal attack. You have good stats.

Chapel Hill is very hard to get into from OOS.

It has an excellent reputation but its admit class is very weighted toward in-state students. OOS students are usually selected to enhance the schools reputation/stats. Several kids from our prep school have gotten in OOS over the last several years. They were all National Merit Finalists with at least All Area sports participation or All State band and/or chorus.

You looked "good enough" statistically but you were not a "slam dunk". Many fine schools would be happy to enroll you.

You cannot be percieved as being rude or even annoying at an elite Southern school and be offered admission. This is true at most highly ranked American schools but is particularly true "down South" where manners are expected. The staffer who answers the phone can torpedo an application with a word to his/her boss. People are consigned to the reject pile for less.

Bear in mind that the person who answered the telephone does not in any way consider themselves to be anyone's social inferior. That is the difference between the US and much of the world. You were the supplicant. You were asking for a priviledge and had no rights other than to be judged on the same basis as other applicants. You annoyed the admissions office by repeated calls. You were percieved as being, at worst, rude and certainly annoying.

Now the good news. Admissions offices do not share a "black list" of unacceptable applicants. You bad experience at UNC will have no effect on your chances anywhere else because that type of information is not collected and shared in any formal way. A UNC staffer might mention a rude applicant to a NCState staffer at an informal social gathering. They would probably not mention the applicant's name. An official at NYU,Renesslaer, or Wake Forrest would not even know you had been rejected at UNC. Learn and move on.

UNC Chapel Hill needs to and does enroll very well qualified students. They do not need to enroll any one particular student, no matter how qualified, who they percieve as rude or even merely annoying. You need to attend some excellent school. You do not need to attend any particular excellent school which was not sympathetic to your circumstances.

Thinking that people all over the world are the same as folks back home has lead to much grief and bloodshed . This is a common fault of Americans. Be aware of the cultural mileau in which you are interacting. One reason American schools enroll international students is to enhance cultural awareness. But they expect certain behaviors from international students living in our culture.

That right there. You're good, but you have to be a slam dunk to get in from out of state. Or have the ability to slam dunk (speaking of which....did anybody see some of Danny Green's blocks tonight, and Tyler Hansbrough's 1st half, and Wayne Ellington's 7 three's in the 2nd half?). You're good, maybe even great, but not a slam dunk.

If, as you indicate, you are an international student, the probable reason you received a rejection is reflected in your own post.

For international students, UNC requires that the application be accompanied by a
"a financial certificate, bank statement, and parent/sponsor letter". Your post indicates that you were not in a position to meet this requirement. I suspect you were rejected simply becease your application did not meet UNC's stated requirements for international applications, without regard to whether you were otherwise qualified.

HOLY HELL!!! I don't know what happened last night, but Wayne Ellington must have eaten his wheaties during halftime or something.....7 three's in a row!!!!
