Why did I not apply for early decision?

So I'm having an interview with an alum from the college soon. My friend was also interviewed from the same person, he told me that the interviewer asked why he didn't apply for early decision after asking him why he wants to go there. I've been thinking about it and really can't come up with any ideas that won't have a negative influence, aka, didn't want to have to commit, etc. So far I just have financial status, seeing as you wouldn't get to see any financial aid with ED, and perhaps going on what other people recommended to me. Anyone have any ideas?

Financial aid

I wanted to improve grades and give the application the utmost amount of time I could give it in order to submit the best application possible.

Hm, I was thinking about saying my grades, especially because I turned them around now that I don't have Spanish. Thanks for the reply.

The Financial Status is a good thing to elaborate on. Well...how about you like to leave your options open? Like if you suddenly found a program in another school you wanted to be entered in, but ED acceptance would prevent you from doing it?

I'm not sure...I mean...WHY didn't you do it? O-o Did you just prefer RD?

I'm sure the financial situation will carry a lot of weight though.

Haha, that's a good question as to why I didn't do it. If I knew I wouldn't have posted here. :) But in all seriousness, I don't think saying "I would like to leave my options open." sounds very good in an interview. It might give them the impression that it isn't my number one choice, which it is. I probably could say I was a bit lackadaisical in my effort on the app until it was due, but honestly I did make it the best one since it's the most pretentious college I applied to.

"I was still weighing my options - both financial and academic - at the time of the ED date, but I realize now that ______ is my top choice."
Something like that might work?

Well, for me my reason for not applying ED to my top choice was strictly financial stuff. It really does play a huge role.

Did you really want to apply ED to this place though?

The school is definitely my top choice but I didn't want to, nor did I, apply to any schools ED.
