So today I checked the decision and they rejected me. I am wondering why since I felt I was more than qualified to attend Georgia. I am pretty pissed off right now.

SAT: 770M, 670R, 650W
Applied: Regular BME
GPA: 4.2 w, 3.7 uw
AP's: AP Calc AB, BC, US History, Euro, Chem, Lit, Rhet, Comp Sci
EC: Xcountry/ track (4 years), Wrestling (2 years), Boeing Internship, Mission trip to India
Rec: Calc teacher

Apparently Georgia tech did not feel the same way.

I don’t know your stats are good for the school. Maybe something in your application was missing or wrong.

Sorry for your rejection. Hard to believe, with such great stats.
CDS does say that 84.1% had GPA of 3.75 or higher. It may have come down to that?
(11.8% w/ GPAs b/w 3.50 and 3.74)

Great stats, so I’m shocked especially since you surpassed their middle 50 in everything by some amount. So while I can’t say why you got rejected, I’m sorry. If you were applying out of state, then that’s probably a factor. I know at competitive state schools like GTECH and Chapel Hill, they only accept about 18% of out of state applicants. That’s an acceptance rate in the range of Vanderbilt and Notre Dame and Rice. So they can afford to be selective and pick the cream of the crop.

Chances are, especially with your unweighted GPA (if it was a 3.8+ you would have had no problem), you weren’t able to compete as well with the other out of state applicants. However, it was probably your essay. That would be the most obvious thing to choose from, especially since your stats were amazing.

And if you were in state, then I have no idea.

The problem is that schools such as Georgia Tech have many more qualified applicants than they can admit. Most applicants are qualified so they need to decide how you compare to others in the applicant pool. Were you the best applicant from your high school? If not, and there were several applicants from your school, Gtech probably took the best applicants from your school. Did you apply early? Or did you apply “late” in the admission cycle? This may also have made the difference.
Your stats are excellent and your profile is engaging, but they’re not top 25%. So for all the “middle 50%”, all kinds of factors come into play: how much interest have you expressed? How well-written was your essay? Did you bring anything special to the university or were there several others with a profile similar to you? At least there don’t take major and interview into account… In short, the concept of a “selective” college is that they select among qualified applicants. It’s certain you made the first cut but apparently you didn’t make the final one. I’m sorry. I know it feels terrible. But hopefully you have other choices: where else have you applied? Have you heard from your safeties yet?
