Why did they accept less this year?

I was reading one of the articles published and it said that they only accepted 13,214 students this year. According to the same news source, last year they accepted 13,624 (?), but this year had 3,000 more applicants. I assumed that with each year they’d open up more spots if there were more applicants.

If anyone knows why, do you think they’ll accept even less for next year?

EDIT: I’m still a Junior that has yet to apply, that’s why I’m asking.

Word on the street (I always wanted to say that, but other parents reported that the HS GC’s were being told this by the UF AO’s), is that they over enrolled in 2016 (7,100 freshman), and would target fewer this year (6,600). This happens at UF and other schools, if they over enroll in one year, they may under-enroll the next year.

I think 6,600 is where they want to be at. Now, UF is only projecting that 6,600 will enroll, we could end up with more or less, and will not know till after the 5/1 deadline.

Oh, if that’s the case I’m really hoping my class gets lucky next year.

Thank you!

I think a lot more kids are enrolling in UF because of the affordability of the school, Benacquisto, etc. It’s a lot more affordable option for middle class students who don’t get much aid at other top schools they were accepted to, ie, Vanderbilt, Duke, Ivies, etc. Student debt is definitely something to avoid.
