Hi all,
I’m curious about why everyone who is going/will be going to UC Berkeley chose the school.
Here are some of my reasons:
- I met some of the professors in my department and thought they were doing really interesting research. (Since my major is smaller, it’s easier to get more individual attention and be involved in research.)
- The campus is beautiful and really green. There are so many trees!
- They have semesters instead of quarters. (I think it’s easier to remember things long-term if I’m in a class for a longer period of time. Also, it’s less rushed.)
What are/were your reasons?
- Food
- Looking back, probably the only chance in life to meet and work with some seriously intense group of people
- Intense, but extremely intellectual and kept impressing me just when I thought I was the smartest.
- People, just people who were/are inspiring.
- Just about any department/major is top 10 - in case I need to switch major or take classes in different department, then I know I'll be getting it from world-renowned folks.
- Each major getting its own building/dedicated floor - it means there's wide variety of research and education.
- Liberal - not for everyone, but it's the only time I didn't have to quite worry about political correctness.
- Some of the classes made me realize Khan Academy can't quite replace the entire education system via online, although it's pretty close.
- Campus is indeed one-of-a-kind. I kind of like there are almost no cars in the campus which is rare for college.

I don’t know if I can do it again because it was too hard, but I certainly am proud to have attended. It affects my work ethic always thinking ‘this is easier than what I had to go through in Berkeley so let’s just do it’.
Perhaps the only desire is I wish more people were interested in Cal just as much as Berkeley (for those who know what this means and sports), and beat the leland stanfurd junior academy a bit more often in football, and maybe go to the Rose Bowl since it’s been like 60 years already.
