Why Did You Choose Yale?

Oh, Byerly. Give it a rest. There are many students who choose Yale over Harvard and many who choose Harvard over Yale. Each have very good and valid reasons for doing so. When my D was pondering her decisions, one of my colleagues at work who is a Harvard undergrad alum advised her to go to Yale. He told her that when he was at Harvard, the joke was "What do Harvard students and Yale students have in common?"

"They both hate Harvard."

That's a funny one!

Magnusrex, thanks for your thoughtful and concise response. I think you've captured well the Yale vibe that attracts certain students. I have noticed that many people who choose Yale do so because of a "feeling" they get from the people and place. Not a lot of comparing statistics, endowment $$$, etc. For many people, the decision comes down to the energy of the place. Maybe that's why Yale students end up so happy with their decision. Because they allow themselves to choose based on what some people would consider irrational reasons. Good for you and congratulations on your decision.

The REAL Q and A, of course, is as follows:

Q - What do Harvard and Yale students have in common?

A - They both got into Yale.

Byerly- If I didn't know better, I'd think you were trying to make a JOKE!
Unfortunately, you actually believe this little funny, which says a lot about you and your arrogance. Fortunately, not ALL the kids at Harvard are as arrogant as you are. I'm sure there are a few who chose their school because they felt it was a good fit for them, and not because it had the most famous name.

Ok, Byerly, so many people have taken the high road and ignored your digs, but enough is enough. Please restrain yourself and leave the Yale Forum if you have nothing constructive to say.

My son was the top graduating senior in his class of 400+. Due to budget constraints, we refrained from college visits until he was either accepted or had received a likely letter. Yale was the only school where I saw a spark in his eye and utter joy in his voice. His dad was hoping our son would pick MIT and I voted heartily for Stanford, but my son fellowed his heart where he has just finished a productive and satisfying first year.

The one other top senior was denied admission to Yale where she applied EA. She was subsequently admitted to Harvard, but turned it down because "it was not Yale."

There are always exceptions that prove the rule, Mom.

Glad your son is satisfied. There is no reason he shouldn't be, as Yale is a very fine school, as are MIT and Stanford.

Stop attacking Byerly and get on with the thread. You don't have to read his comments. In particular, you don't have to take the bait and say he is wrong.

I think it is fairly obvious that Byerly is right if you remember he is saying that, in the most general sense, Harvard is the #1 university in the US (and probably the world). I'm talking the most general sense.

Now take a deep breath. Remind yourself that there are countless specific reasons for choosing another place over Harvard. And vice versa.

I believe Byerly's joke came from a shirt they were selling at The Game a few years ago.

Here is one member of the Crimson's take on it: http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=350219

"Some of the t-shirts out there are also just plain arrogant. Dartboard almost bought one when she read the text: “What do Harvard and Yale students have in common? They both got into Yale!” The kid next to Dartboard mumbled, “Well I sure didn’t.” Several others confessed that they too had received Yale rejection letters. Is the t-shirt meant to make us appear conceited, or sarcastic?"

Best,
DMW

I think Byerly is only having a bit of fun. He's probably bored, and has thus turned to the Yale forum to provide him some good cheer.

Overall, I think that Yale students have more school spirit than Harvard students. Maybe it's partly due to the fact that it's cooler to yell out, "Yeah, bulldogs!" at events than to yell out "Yeah, crimson!"

Also, I'm madly in love with Yale's Perspectives on Science course. I don't know where people get the idea that Yale doesn't focus on science when they've spent millions on new buildings and have set up PoS-like courses that hook you up with professors to do some research over the summer.

On a side note, Ricardo, what on Earth are you doing? o_O I'm caught between wanting to laugh and being a little weirded out.

Ivywise's message in my mailbox:
.....you don't have to take the bait and trying to prove he is wrong. Byerly never says anything false. I think it is fairly obvious that if you are looking for which is the #1 university in the US (and probably the world) it is Harvard.....

Ginny (thanx for using your real name), you are right: we are all only having a bit of fun, and it sometimes gets weird, but some of us (including me) find it more addictive than others.
