Why Didnt I Buckle Down?@?@?!?!?!

repost, added some more ECs

please help

Hey, so, i messed up in High School, (I am currently a Junior), but I am trying to salvage what is left and get into an okay college

So,
GPA
UC UW- 3.46
UC W-3.8

Privates take 10th grade eng Honors weighted I believe, so my GPA will be a little higher

Class rank- top 10% (my high school is not particularly rigorous, except for like the top 30 asian kids - not a knock, im part asian)

ethnicity=mixed male (white and asian)

ACT-31 (estimate, as I am taking it on April 12th)

2 APs this year, 1 Honors, advanced math, advanced language

Next year: 3 or 4 APs, advanced language

EC:
really crappy
2 years book club (1 year secretary)
Varsity Fencing (1 year)
Volunteer work in Malaysia ( worked at several special need homes, have awesome photos and had a newspaper article written about me -albeit in Chinese)
Co founder and Vice president of Music Appreciation club (please don't laugh)
Church helper (food for the poor), want to get about a hundred hours (currently 6 and counting)

So, my list (match me or reach me or whatever, please )

NWU (applying for kicks, know I will not get in)
UCSD
UW (seattle)
USC
UCI
UCSB
UCD
UCSC Safeties (I hope)
UCM

So, please help, and suggestions would be great, I'm trying to pad my resume as we speak

Thanks so much

Your Malaysia work is impressive and cool! The only stuff I guess I think you should focus on is getting your ACT score up high. Also, I think you should involve yourself in something that you are passionate in deeply, so that come admissions time you can talk about it. Or at least that's what I think worked out for me..

Thanks for the advice shogun, i am trying to get an internship this summer.

any other suggestions? Critiques?

i have no idea but i would like to say that i have a lot of respect for you bc most kids doing the whole chances things are doing it just to brag and show off their grades and receive affirmation that yeah they'll get into any school.... peace

Haha, thanks, yeah, unlike those kids, there is a good chance I will not get into a school that I like.

Can someone please help with the match reach safety stuff?

Its really hard to get someone else's opinion (my college advisor swears that I will get into any college :), but I know that the truth is quite different)

thanks

bump, please help

well the church isn't bad... especially if you can get a rec from your priest...

that would show great dedication to colleges and really help them identify who you are

But the 3.46 isn't too good especially in a school where people don't care that much

are you in state? that changes your chances at UCs drastically

Are you from Malaysia?

I live in California, however, if i got into UW, i would be down to pay the OOS tuition.

Also, I was under the impression that the only gpa that that the UCs would look at would be the weighted UC grade 3.8

If you like UCSB and you don't get in, here is how you can "go there" without being accepted.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-santa-barbara/468098-backdoor-way-get-into-ucsb.html

Maybe one last bump, does anyone want to trade matches? You scratch my back, ill scratch yours?

It's quite sad that on these boards, you and I are considered the mess-ups. I think you did a good job in high school, and your EC's are NOT weak. Personally, I'm confused, hearing so many different opinions about where I could get in. One counselor says I'm in at NYU, and another says I ought to look at more "average" schools.

Sorry, that has nothing to do with matching you, but it did bump your post up a bit! Just wanted to sympathize with you.

And by the way, come to think of it, the schools we're thinking of applying to tend to differ from the Ivy League schools everyone else on these boards is going for. I'm not meaning to show hostility towards you guys, but there definitely aren't very many of the "not-perfect" kids on here. But still, I don't think you're a mess-up.
