Why didn't I get into the honors college?

Today I got my acceptance letter for the Pitt Swanson Engineering College. All that came in the packet was the letter, a book about engineering, and a fact sheet about engineering branches. My friends who got into Pitt (regular Pitt, not engineering) and got into the honors college said that it said they were in the hc in their letter. However, mine did not say that. I was confident I would get into the hc. I have 1450 combined math and reading SAT (660 reading, 790 math) and 760 on writing (a total of 2210). My gpa (weighted out of 5) is 4.2 and I'm in the top 10% in my class of 460 students (I could be even lower in the percents but my counselor only told me top 10%). I have taken 3 AP classes and all honors in prior years, and this year I am only taking 5 AP classes. The reason my GPA is so low is that I take orchestra, art, photo, and health, which brings it down. Does anyone know why I didn't get into the honors college or if I am just missing something?

If what we see on the web site is to be taken at face value, it’s your class rank. Your CR + M is > 1400 but the UHC also requires you to be in the top 5% of your class.

I get what you’re saying about being penalized for following your interests rather than sticking to heavily-weighted classes. My S stayed with band all four years despite no weighting and chose French over Spanish where he could have finished with an AP course rather than the hodgepodge of weighting the French program has. He’s managed to stay near the top of his class, but the likely valedictorian isn’t exactly looking over her shoulder. :)

Some schools have an appeals process. I don’t know about Pitt. Best of luck to you!

I think some people said their official UHC letter arrives separate from the acceptance one. You can ask your advisor to be let into any UHC class you would like to take freshman year, after that, UHC only requires a 3.25 (B+ average GPA) for students to be “UHC eligible” as upperclassmen. If you would like to do UHC housing your freshman year, simply email them and ask if you can apply. I’m sure they’ll say yes.

esecro - your stats match up nearly identical to my ds’ - he was accepted into swanson and then nothing about uhc. He emailed admissions after a few weeks because we thought maybe the decision for acceptance was made prior to receiving the Oct. SAT results asking (nicely) if reconsideration for UHC could be given. They responded right away and said a decision would be made within 7-10 days. He got the UHC acceptance letter within those 10 days. Not sure whether the email made any difference but they were receptive to the request for reconsideration and later (about 1 mo.) he received the OOS 10K scholarship. He’s a frosh engineer now and loving Pitt. Just send a quick email, it will make you feel better.
