I know it's way too late to worry about this but I'm just curious. A lot of my friends got way more college mailings than I did, even though I'm ranked #1 and I got a 2350 SAT. Does anyone know what determines who colleges send brochures to? Is there some weird mistake going on that might have larger implications that should cause concern? Thanks!!!

Well, colleges use PSAT information to mail brochures to you. They also have mailing lists. Actually, not receiving any college brochures does not need to cause any concern. You’re perfectly fine.

I have twin sons, juniors. One receives tons of college junk mail, the other receives none. It must have something to do with a box you checked or didn’t check when you were bubbling in all those little ovals. Don’t worry about it. It means you are helping to save trees, rather than having useless college snail mail arrive. My son who receives it, just puts it in the recycling bin.

I wish I unchecked that.

I don’t recieve college mail either. Though I’ve requested some from universities, and still have never been mailed. So yeah, I don’t know the reason much either.

My son never got those mailings. He says he thinks he bubbled in the oval that said soemthing to the effect of “don’t send me junk mail.” It was a little odd when all his friends were receiving mountains of the stuff, but in retrospect it was a good thing. :)

I personally think that there’s some random process. I’m an international student and many of my friends applied to the same U.S. universities as I did and we receive information from different universities. For instance, we both attended a U.S. college fair some time in October or November and we both filled out a little card at the Johns Hopkins booth and she got mailed a whole lot of stuff whereas I didn’t but I was sent a CD and brochures etc from Carnegie Mellon. It’s very strange… which makes me think that there’s no basis for who they choose.

Thought I would update:

Hmm maybe there is a random process, I just recently recieved mail from Florida State University and Eastern Michigan University. I was surprise to get mail from both of the schools.

^ I got florida state info for 3 years.

Oh wow ( ever started to consider going to the university?).
Checking usnews ranking I thought Florida State University may have been ranked near University of Florida. Though it is ranked 102, but still I see it as a good university. Now I know that University of Minnesota- Twin Cities is the most prestige school I recieved mail from.

What I find funny is my D gets a lot of mail from Catholic schools, and we’re not Catholic, but she has THE most catholic sounding name, first, middle, last.
