Why do Americans and Canadians hate each other?

I'm sure that soon the entire nation of Canada will allow same-sex marriage won't make them any more popular in Jesusland. (<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/americas/06/28/canada.marriage.reut/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/americas/06/28/canada.marriage.reut/index.html</a>)</p>

I rest my case.

In the end, I don't think Canadians care all that much about their neighbor to the south. They get along just fine minding their own business. Well, except when we pull **** like blaming them for bad beef when it's clearly not their fault (***?) but yeah, other than that ...

And let's not get into Mexico, because I could go on for ages.

Thumbs up for Canada!!

"The fact that Canada, for all intents and purposes, has the full protection of the US military -- the strongest military in the world -- means yes, they're quite lucky."
Even if we don't know how to guide that oh-so-wonderful military? Plus, they don't have that protection for all intents and purposes. They could easily be attacked. Who says we'd even defend them?

Canada-bashing comes a lot from that stupid South Park and it's song Blame Canada. It's BS, and if I could stand colder weather, I'd move to Canada.

Thumbs up for canada!!

"Plus, they don't have that protection for all intents and purposes. They could easily be attacked. Who says we'd even defend them?"

You seriously think the US would willingly allow any sort of major attack on Canada? If there were enemy forces in Canada, there would be a huge national security risk due to the unsecured border. Not to mention Canada is rather important economically.

On an off note, I think the amount of liberals here (and in colleges in general) is funny. I'll look forward to the time when you grow older and follow the trend of moving to the right as you mature.

Mavin man, you should know that liberals don't change their views -- the mainstream does. That's why "one century's liberals are the next century's conservatives." Humanity has been getting more liberal for centuries. If you spoke out against the Catholic Church centuries ago (even if you were right), you'd be killed or imprisoned. 150 years ago slavery was a fact of life. 100 years ago women couldn't vote. 50 years ago there was segregation. 33 years ago abortion was illegal. 50 years from now we'll have abandoned the death penalty, gay marriage will be everywhere (and no one will think it a big deal!), and we'll be moving on to the next great advancement for mankind.

"believe me, it's not like Canada is/could actually stop us."

probably true, but every time we've tried to invade them we've failed, so I wouldn't be too quick to say so!

Matthew's right there. I mean there are always some people who drift right once they start making money because of taxes or for various other reasons but there are also plenty of people who drift left after being raised right because they see that maybe some of the things going on right now are not acceptable.

Other than that, its pretty much the shift of the mainstream. As the world gets more and more liberal, eventually people stop and say "thats enough" such as I would if we one day said "lets be communist". Go Socialism!

Wow, this thread is turning from "Why do we hate Canadians" to "Why do we hate the French" to "Canada rocks" and finally to "Go Socialism!" very quickly -- I wonder what's going to be next...haha...fun!

I love Canada! Mr Big Bars = Heaven

Looking forward to Laborday weekend when I will go hear my favorite rock band play in Canada

Canada owns, and the whole world knows it.

::On an off note, I think the amount of liberals here (and in colleges in general) is funny.::

But this couldn't mean that liberals are smarter than conservatives. Oh no.

Americans don't hate Canadians. They mostly ignore them, regarding them as another sort of American - not really foreigners.

Canadians do seem to resent Americans though, mostly for ignoring them and considering them as another sort of American. Plus there is a sort of Little Brother syndrome going on.

Canadians can't tell you what they are, but they can sure tell you what they are not: They are NOT Americans. And since Americans sort of shrug and decline to see it that way, the Canadians resent it.

Canadians are perhaps the only people in the world who define themselves by what they are not instead of what they are.

as someone who's lived in both canada and the us...

canada has major inferiority complexes regarding the US. call it jest, but even when conan came to toronto last year, they had a wrestling match between the CN tower and the seattle space needle, with the toronto crowd screaming insults at the space needle.

canada is preoccupied by fear of being overshadowed by the US (as they always are), so canadians poke fun at america in retaliation.

the US basically does not care about canada. i doubt that many of my high school friends from the states could name canada's political leaders. yes, its ignorant, but its also a result of canada not mattering to the average american joe enough to make them care.

i really dont know why canada cares so much about the states. its time to chill out.

all that said, i really preferred living in canada as compared to dc. people were friendlier (before they found out i was an american) and there isnt so much emphasis on food, EH!

bad jokes aside... its an inferiority complex, magnified by the fact that americans dont care.

"i doubt that many of my high school friends from the states could name canada's political leaders. yes, its ignorant, but its also a result of canada not mattering to the average american joe enough to make them care."

Agreed. Even though I like canada and try to pay attention to international affairs, I was playing the TV Trivia game at my local Buffalo Wild Wings (35cent tuesdays baby!) and in one round, one of the only questions I had any trouble with was a question about a very recent political leader in canada. It gave his name and said canada and asked you to choose what he was famous for and until all but two of the answers were eliminated, politics was my LAST choice.

I don't hate anybody, but maybe that's because I'm Irish and Jamaican [insert jokes here]. If any of us "Americans" ( I'm confusing you) hate Canada it's probably because of the whole four years to get citizenship after Bush was re-elected.

Peas

"Mavin man, you should know that liberals don't change their views -- the mainstream does."

While I agree with you that over time, the mainstream does evolve to become more liberal, people still tend to move towards the center as they grow older.

"But this couldn't mean that liberals are smarter than conservatives. Oh no."

No, actually, because, like I said, most people tend to mature as they grow older and move to the center.
