But are they (liberals) really moving towards the center as the age or is the [Mainstream] center moving towards them? ;-)

A Canadian Joke:

Given its history and geography, Canada could have had the best of three worlds. It could have had American technology, combined with British stability of government, and French culture,

But what it ended up with is British technology, French stability of government, and American culture.

this really made me laugh!!!!

French people? Beautiful, healthy, intelligent and cultured.

As opposed to Americans who are ugly, sick, stupid, and boorish? Wow, 280 million of those must be quite the ordeal. I'm sure you counted and documented each person before making such general condemnation.

Since Canada has no tangible national identity, it feels the need to "hate" the U.S.; If American culture is thin, then Canada's is thin-lite. Some Canadians find solace in trying to use their distant connections with Britain to feel more at home as Europeans (who have culture in abundance), which is why they proudly boast about their socialist-lite government and relatively lenient pot laws. Others define Canada by bashing most things American, thus defining their country by what it's not rather than what it is. But Canada is neither England nor America; it lacks England's history and culture, while coming up short in America's national zest and abrasive exuberance. So Canada goes along, lost in trying to identify themselves with an sadly increasingly fringe sport (hockey) and what other little national idiosyncracies we have.

^ i think this post can be closed now. that completely summed it up.

I wasn't making a generalization about Americans. I was saying that French people and culture are for hte most part great and don't deserved to be bashed.

it's funny how we say Americans and Canadians as if we are speaking for everyone in those countries. Who is representing these countries?

I happen to like Canada.. err.. and the people in it seem .. fine..

"increasingly fringe sport (hockey)"
why do you define it that way?

i'm offended by this:

"::On an off note, I think the amount of liberals here (and in colleges in general) is funny.::

But this couldn't mean that liberals are smarter than conservatives. Oh no."

...and feel the overwhelming need to respond

"if you're not liberal by the time you're 20 you have no heart.
if you're not conservative by the time you're 40, you have no brain."
-winston churchill

"Inability to skate, shoot, or pass," Martin said, "will no longer be a
sufficient reason for denying any Canadian an opportunity to play in the
NHL." Paul Martin

Is this inclusiveness or stupidity? Then what the hell makes a hockey player good?

And he also said: Commencing next season, the Toronto Maple Leafs will be moved

to Fredericton and the Edmonton Oilers to Charlottetown."

Ok, sounds nice and equalitarian, and what if the god damn frederictonians don't like Hockey?, and look at this:

"Once nationalized, all NHL teams will be subject to federal government
guidelines for gender equality, affirmative action, and
non-discrimination in hiring."

Ok , but don't you think that at the end of the day that's also a melting pot, assuming that all canadians regardless of their origin should like hockey, what about the cultutral mosaic? Why not then promote a Canadian bullfighting association, if Canada is so mutlicultural, then that must be done.
Quite simply, there's a contradiction there: no country can lack a core culture, and forced multiculturalism is also artificial and impossitive, the most pro-canadian canadians tend to realize this, whereas most pro-canadian anti-american foreigners tend to ignore this. At the end of the day, these guys aren't really pro-canadians, they like Canada because it means nothing to them, is like loving the taste of plain water, it could be combined with anything, because it doesn't have a real flavor of its own!!!!!

french canadians (quebecois) hate english canadians...

Hockey has little appeal in the U.S., which is critical for it to become a mainstream main event sport. Hockey's most popular in countries like Canada, the Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, and Finland: hardly top-tier nations media-wise. In America, the NHL is routinely outrated by the freaking AFL (Arena Football League), which goes to show you how much respect it garners down there. In some isolated cases, like in Minnesota or Detroit, hockey's really popular, but most American fans would rather watch the NFL, NBA, or even the MLB before the NHL.

I'm not trying to judge hockey's merit based on American attitudes, but its viability as a business relies heavily, if not solely, upon them. And right now, it's in the pit. That's why it's an increasingly fringe sport, like Arena Football.

OK, sounds fair then. please tell me what do you think of my post on hockey and plitically correctness

I haven't read the whole thread but it's really interesting and I wanted to respond...

I'm a very open-minded person when it comes to different cultures. However, when I went on a school trip and met a bunch of Canadian kids (they were all from Toronto) they were the most arrogant, condescending people I'd ever met in my life! They kept bashing all things American even when we all tried to be nice to them and couldn't stop talking about our hideous government, our fat people, and our over-indulged culture. How rude!!! I would never talk like that to people from another country about a place I've never even lived. In my opinion, they suffer from a severe inferiority complex.

On the other hand, I've had very positive experienced with people from Quebec.

CityGal%: You know why that happened? Because quebecois don't need to wear a Mapple Leaf outside their contry to show the world they're not Americans.

No kidding...have you noticed the pride with which non-Quebecois Canadians wear those Maple Leaf patches on their backpacks? It's almost comical that they think they'll be treated better in a foreign country.

Yes, thanks to clever advertising by the formerly American-owned (now controlled by Belgians) Molson Brewing Co., anti-Americanism is very chic in Canada.

And very chic in the rest of the world now, for that matter.

If your going to a country to look for wepons of mass destruction, what better time to use them on the most hatted country in the world. No maybe Iraq will keep the wepons and use them later, to invade Kuwait again who knows.

And to anwser above. You want to know why Canada's army's so weak. We spend only 750 millionUS$ on the millitary while the US spends 15 BillionUS$! Thats why we depend on the American Army. I don't dislike the states but Bush has gone to far. Canada has the 4th best millitary in the world. Yeah back in the first and second world wars.

NOTE: If the US tried to invade Canada, I think everyone would have our backs. What a great time to use those wepons of mass destruction.Except France they would surrender.

We hate Canadians? Huh. First I'm hearing about it.

Canadians are fine. I have no problem with a nation that produces awesome artists (like Celine Dion and Alanis Morrisette) or amazing authors (like L.M. Montgomery). Plus, Prince Edward Island (PEI for all you Anne freaks like me), is up there.

AND they speak almost exclusively French in certain states, without the really bad military strategies.

What's not to like?
