why do asians like school so much?

I realize that I am seconding a lot of what people have already said, but there really seems to be no reason to ask these kinds of questions, knowing that they only give rise to more talk on stereotypes. Personally, I am an Indian American student who does not memorize and regurgitate information. I do my best in school for myself as do most people. I can understand where the stereotype may come from, but that’s all it is, a stereotype. I don’t go to school because of my parents, I go to school because it is important to me as an individual.

lmao that’s not how u spell dishonor

lmao.
dishoner…haha

that’s like my parents

My stepmom went to GTech and some Asian guy in her physics class forgot to bring his calculator. He failed the final and hung himself the next day…grades aren’t everything, people, chill out.

Look narcissa I don’t think pointing out correlations falls under being racist. Its just pointing out a trend that exist among a sample population. Is there a correlation between eating fast food everyday and being obese? Yes. Is there a case where someone isn’t obese and eats fast food everyday? Yes. Does that disprove the correlation? No it doesn’t because its just one case. Its completely fine to generalize because thats what correlations are.

OMG! that is the funniest thing i have ever read.

Narcissa:
you really should stop posting in race related posts… if you had common sense/knew how to handle sensitive topics you would be able to understand that being stereotyped as liking to “shoot/rape” is a lot worse than being stereotyped as “liking” school way too much.

what should you get from this? yes. all stereotypes are bad since they hinder the way in which people interact. however, it is the case that some stereotypes can be positive while others are negative. because of this we can say that one stereotype is less “dangerous” than another stereotype.

holy ****!

that seriously depressed me.

People should stop being dense. Asians don’t like school anymore than other members of a different race.

WHYZ DO THEY GETZ SUCH GOOD GRADEZ THEN!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?11one

The Asians in question are usually first generation Americans born from immigrant parents. Having immigrated from poorer and less fortunate areas of the world, immigrant parents have a healthy respect for education and academia. As such, they pressure their children to do well in school.

Duh.

and also asian culture, such as the tradition of testing into governmental jobs instead of getting in thru connections in ancient times, pushes kids to do well academically.

So have we found out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop?

I thought as much.

Interesting conversation. One thing: I’m at Berkeley right now, and asians top the academic awards every year. But the school is over 60% Asian…in other words, you’ve got to look at it proportionally as well.

they still do academic awards in college…?

^ Yes they do. And Berkeley isn’t 60% Asian, it’s more in the lower 50’s =P

My mom is Korean and says that asians getting 4.0 gpas here with like 2250 SATs could not even make the cut back in Korea. Education is so sick over there it does not even sound realistic. My mom said kids go to school until 4 in the afternoon and then go to education centers until like 9 EVERY DAY. Education can be so strict…

that’s sad that colleges still give out academic awards. you’d think that students would just learn for learning’s sake and that academic awards would be frowned upon for being incentives for immature students to strive for…

9? I have friends in Korea who go to education centers until 2-3AM. And go to school at 7 in the morning.

And one of them still had to take a gap year because he didn’t get into his top choice college.

Sorry, haven’t checked the stats in a while… 8P

Wow, just wow.

I’m curious as to why it would be so hard over there relative to here. Especially since I’ve never heard of any world class universities from Korea.

Too many people, not enough universities, I think.
