Why do California, Massachusetts, and New York have the strongest student bodies?

^To Zamzam: BC is ranked like 30 something. Definitely within the top 40

It’s always really interesting to look at the cut-off points for National Merit. Kids with a 202 from Alabama or Arkansas can be NMF, but kids need over a 222 from states in the NE like MA, NY, CT.

That sure says something about the quality of education.

^Hippo724: I always forget where BC is in the rankings… Regardless, my point is that Massachusetts doesn’t just have Harvard and MIT.

Also: drzhivago, DC and MA both had cutoffs of 223 as compared to the 221 used by NJ and MD.

I have a list of the 2007 top ten NM cutoff scores somewhere, let me go find it.

Edit: 1. District of Columbia 223

 1. Massachusetts 223
 2. Maryland 221
 3. New Jersey 221
 4. Delaware 219
 5. New York 219
 6. California 218
 7. Connecticut 217
 8. Virginia 217

aww…i’m not going to make the CT cutoff (even I took the test in NJ)…
and I don’t think my HS in Waterford have too many poeple going to ivies that much each year except 1 or 2, but definitely not schools like Stanford, MIT, caltech. I heard that almost nobody in my school’s history have been accepted into or gone to MIT.
and I don’t think the people in the South are stupid or anything like that because I was also born and raised in TX for most of my life. I’ve met all kinds of people there, from all ranges of educational level.I"ve had some friends who are very competitive (planning to go to HYPMS) in TX. But really, it depends on the individual and a lot of other factors.

i visited the south… i had difficulty understanding what the people were saying. less racist than i thought the south would be but the fear factor of being chased by people in white hoods inside a red truck with a confederate flag exists. maybe give the south another 30-40 years and it will be a lot more liberal. southern food by the way is amazing… no wonder the ppl there are husky

It probably has a lot to do with the fact that NY and CA have such large populations. Such a huge population means that there will be a larger number of top students than in smaller states.

I’m not sure that I buy the premise of this question. What is the evidence that these 3 states have the strongest student bodies? In particular, California’s student body, on average, is frankly not that good.

I’m assuming the real question is ‘Why is such a large portion of the student body at top schools from California, Massachusetts, and New York’, to which the answer is: because those states have a large percentile of the wealthiest Americans. A huge portion of the California student body is not well qualified, but there are so many students at the top because of the overall size that it just seems that Californians as a whole are more represented.

3365, i find that incredibly offensive. you had trouble understanding what we were saying? i think that’s a reflection of YOUR intelligence, not ours.

wildchartermag…waterford is not from one of the two wealthier/high-achieving regions that CT is known for. These two regions - Fairfield County (Darien, Ridgefield, New Canaan, Wilton, Westport,Greenwich) and the Hartford SUBURBS (notthe city itself) - Avon,Simsbury,West Hartford,Cheshire…are where the wealthier areas lie.

I’m with you 100%, and here is an example of someone from the north being very ignorant when it comes to the south:

3365, What are you talking about? Have you ever been to Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Atlanta, or any other major city in the south? It is nothing like that… I have lived here all my life and I have never been chased by anybody in a truck with confederate flags. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Did you know that Texas has the highest number of Fortune 500 companies in 2008, followed by New York and California? I’m pretty sure those companies did not have trouble communicating with others around the world.

Okay this might seem a bit odd and a little bit out of place of this thread, but I find this to be a legitimate concern of mine about going to school in the South. I’m an Asian-American born and raised in the northeast, and my parents are afraid that the South may be less tolerant to minorities. Has anyone found this to be true?

Fairfield Country FTW…read the UrbanDictionary definition for a good laugh.

But seriously its a matter of higher income —>> more stress placed on education.

lol no! Did you not see my post above lol? I am not going to lie and say there are not racist people here because there are racist people everywhere but I am a minority, and I have been here my whole life, and I have not been discriminated against. I promise  Where are you looking to go to school? If you’re still worried (I don’t know why, you really have nothing to worry about), then try visiting the schools you are interested in. I guarantee it will be just like the North except a little hotter and the people will speak differently. Just for the record, southerners think northern people speak funny. I still cannot fathom the idea of someone saying “pop” or “soda” for coke. How weird…

yo man hpa. i am asian and i visited tennessee and alabama… kind of scary place for minority when everyone kind of has this stare at you. when i am talking about south i mean the deep south. i dont really think texas is in the south. also congratulations on texas for having most fortune 500 companies even though most of the companies that are in texas are started outside of texas and only moved to texas because of lower taxes.

…i am asian and from one of the states you visited. people are not like that at all. did you visit a CITY? cause it’s exactly the same, except with nicer people. whom anyone with half a brain can completely understand.

for all those who live in connecticut where are you guys from?

if you look at us the wrong way in texas, we’ll tie you up to our pickups and drag you along the interstate. we’ll also pull our 12 gauges out of the back and shoot your feet. and that’s if the mexican gangs dont get you first with their switchblades.

LOL westside. As a minority who has lived in Texas all the time, i will attest that there is some rascism, but it is more prejudice than rascism, i.e. i have never been discrimnated against (i’m black btw) but in California i did notice it was slightly different. But that aside i mean ppl are ppl and have bias everywhere and i would say go to a city, i live in the burbs of Houston and it is so diverse, i mean not many hispanics but every type of Asian under the sun. But sometimes the Asian girls are HOT ;)!

screw that, i am staying in cali
