Why do college students like alcohol?

For those of you who like alcohol, list the reasons why you do. I don't get why drunkenness is equated with celebration (the "work hard, party hard" mantra, where "party"= alcohol consumption)

Because EVERYONE is doing it.

:p
Most people in college DON'T drink.

Perhaps people who rely on alcohol to loosen their inhibitions don't have much self-confidence?

It's good to experience new things if you haven't already. But, moderation is the key. I think college students "like" alcohol because it's "the" drink for adults. Honestly, when I see high school kids holding beer cans I just can't help but chuckle.

Maybe you should try getting drunk sometime, because it's an enthralling experience.

Im sure it has to do with them being prohibited of using it before getting to college. The human race is like that, you prohibit something and the more one wants it just for the hell of getting "the prohibited fruit".

Its the same thing with weed, smoking and everything else that is prohibited.

-It tastes good
-It relaxes you
-You bond over it
-It separates the 'work' personality to the 'weekend' personality
-You feel more adult
-Its illegal under 21, but its not illegal in general so its slight rebellion (as opposed to doing coke)
-It makes you feel good
-Meet new people
-expand your social circle

It also kind of makes everything more fun. I'm not sure I agree about it tasting good, though.

because it loosens people up, young people are pretty awkward around eachother, sometimes its fun to get a bit tipsy, meet new people, hook up, fall in love, and have a good time. I don't think most people get TRASHED every weekend, but getting buzzed a bit and having a good time is no sin.

And so is:

Getting sexually assaulted or sexually assaulting someone else.
Getting run over by a car or running someone over with a car.
Doing something stupid; getting yourself on the Internet; and having it follow you around the rest of your life.
Vomiting or urinating on yourself or someone else.
Loosing your wallet and cellphone.
Embarrassing yourself and not knowing it.
Getting arrested.

Enthralling experiences, indeed.

c'mon tsdad. any and all those things can happen when your sober. People aren't stupid, college students know that risks of danger increase when you drink, but that's part of our growing up, taking some risks. Danger's pretty fun, you were a college student once I assume, college is all about stickin' your neck out, having fun, getting a bit revolutionary. Drinking in college has taught me my limits, and i find the most people aren't out to always get trashed, but to have a good time.

IF you don't want those risks, you could always smoke pot (another really cool experience, one of the best things since sliced bread)

Uh, what about academics, learning, preparing for future careers...?

I don't know. I can't drink because I have GERD and alcohol irritates the condition.

Almost every kid I know in college, including schools like Harvard, Dartmouth, Standford, etc. gets drunk. Most college students DO drink. Doesn't mean its healthy, though.

I was in AA for 18 months, stopped going to meetings now I drink 3-4 times a week. I was happier when I was sober :(.

Drinking is fun, you just have to watch out and not be stupid.

Drink like a Dutchman

People drink because it's fun. It loosens you up and gives you a warm, euphoric feeling. Contrary to what certain posters on the Parents' Forum (tsdad, for example) might say, drinking isn't a bad thing as long as you stay within your bounds. You shouldn't knock it until you've tried it.

Yes because all those things never happen when people are sober and always happen when people drink. In fact I heard you can get pregnant by looking at a bottle of Absolut. ;) That statment reminds me of when teachers in high school used to say "when you get out into the real world..."lol
Some people just love to blow things out of porportion. Drinking, as with everything else in life, should be done in moderation. I personally like the way beer tastes.

yes, an addition to the defence of alcohol consumption....:
One of the things i have learned about alcohol and youths is that it is really ok to drink as much as you want... as long as you kindof know where your limit is and that you are in a safe environment with friends... who could take care of you if something goes wrong or if something happens. It's all about responsibility.

Being drunk is very fun.

It probably isn't very safe, healthy, or smart, but you didn't ask whether college students SHOULD like alcohol, just why they do.
